DURHAM, New Hampshire- The UConn women's hockey team shutout the University of New Hampshire Wildcats Sunday afternoon for the fifth straight win. Megan Warrener recorded 20 saves in the shutout win, while senior Kathryn Stockdale scored one goal and dished out one assist.
The Huskies dominated the first period, outshooting the Wildcats 14-5 in the first period, and coming away with three goals. UConn opened the scoring early following a New Hampshire penalty. While on the power play, graduate student Claire Peterson found senior Kathryn Stockdale alone on the side of the goal for the easy tip in. The Huskies didn't stop there as captain Coryn Tormala skated down the right side of the ice and fired the shot past New Hampshire netminder Sedona Blair for the second goal of the night. The Huskies capped off their strong first period with their second power play goal of the afternoon courtesy of captain Ainsley Svetek.
With the three-goal lead, the Huskies defense and goaltending was strong. The Huskies held the Wildcats scoreless as junior goaltender Megan Warrener saved all six shots on goal. UConn once again outshot New Hampshire but were unable to extend their lead in the second period.
In the third period, the Huskies defense and goaltending continued to shine as they blanked the Wildcats. The Huskies held the Wildcats to under 10 shots on goal across the three periods. The Huskies sealed the win late in the third period as Kathryn Stockdale found Megan Woodworth cross ice for the breakaway goal.
Junior goaltender Megan Warrener finished with 20 saves in the shutout win and improves to 10-0-1 on the season.
With the win, UConn improves to 16-6-2 overall and 13-3-1 in Hockey East Action. The Huskies will be back in action Friday January 26 as they welcome Vermont to the Toscano Family Ice Forum for a two-game series.
