BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sophomore Lane Hutson matched his career high with four assists and freshman Macklin Celebrini collected two goals to help lead the No. 1 Boston University men's ice hockey team to a 5-1 win at Vermont on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
BU (15-4-1, 10-1-1 HE) never trailed Vermont (10-10-1, 4-6-1 HE) en route to its sixth straight victory. Senior Luke Tuch, sophomore Quinn Hutson and senior Dylan Peterson also lit the lamp while sophomore Ryan Greene recorded two assists. Junior Jack Hughes, freshman Tom Willander and sophomore Jeremy Wilmer added one assist apiece.
Junior goaltender Mathieu Caron had another terrific performance, turning aside 26 of the 27 shots he faced. He also anchored a Terrier penalty kill that was 5-for-5 on Friday. In addition, the BU power play went 3-for-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tuch opened the scoring 11:37 into the proceedings with a terrific redirection of a Willander shot during the Terriers' first power play of the night.
- Celebrini doubled the lead with 1:31 remaining in the period. Lane blocked a shot and swiftly pushed the puck up ice to create a 4-on-2. He got to the top of the right circle, stopped and dished the puck through two defenders to Celebrini in the slot. Celebrini collected the pass and ripped a shot past Gabe Carriere.
- UVM got a goal back 6:15 into the second stanza to cut its deficit to 2-1, but Celebrini scored his second of the night just 2:15 later during a 5-on-3 power play to give BU a 3-1 edge that it took into the final 20 minutes.
- Caron and Peterson combined to keep the score 3-1 thanks to a fantastic combined effort late in the frame, as Caron made two stops and Peterson had a clutch block in front of an emtpy net to keep the Catamounts from pulling back within one.
- Peterson and Quinn Hutson each lit the lamp in a span of 1:10 to make it a 5-1 game just 4:17 into the third period.
GAME NOTES
- BU has killed off the last 16 power plays it has faced.
- Caron has posted a 1.33 goals-against average and a .951 save percentage during the Terriers' six-game win streak.
- Celebrini now leads all NCAA rookies with 15 goals and he is second among all freshmen with 31 points.
- He has recorded at least two points in each of the last four games as part of his five-game point streak.
- Hutson's last four-assist and four-point game was at Maine on Feb. 3, 2023.
- The Terriers are 15-1-0 at Gutterson Fieldhouse since 2011.
