BOSTON - Freshman Gavin McCarthy tied the game in the second period and then scored the lone shootout goal as the No. 2 Boston University men's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 draw in Friday's exhibition at Agganis Arena.
After neither team broke through in overtime, freshman Max Lacroix turned aside all three attempts he faced before McCarthy, the third Terrier over the boards in the shootout, scored the winner. Lacroix finished the night with 14 saves in his first-ever appearance for the Terriers. Senior Dylan Peterson and junior Jack Hughes assisted on McCarthy's second-period strike. Kolby Matthews stopped 46 of the 47 shots he faced in regulation and overtime.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Walker Erickson gave SFU a 1-0 lead at 13:42 of the first period.
- BU killed a pair of penalties early in the second stanza to keep the deficit at one.
- McCarthy brought BU level at the 16:41 mark of the second. Hughes won the puck along the half-wall and dished it to Peterson, who then slid the puck across the zone to McCarthy for a one-timer that beat Matthews.
- Not only did Matthews play well, but BU hit five posts in total, including one with 2:25 remaining in regulation.
- The Terriers recorded the only three shots on target in overtime but were unable to get a shot past Matthews.
- Lacroix's poise between the pipes in the shootout set the stage for McCarthy's winner in the third round.
