BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team closed out its first half with a 5-1 home victory over Providence on Saturday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.
Sophomore Clara Yuhn, senior Catherine Foulem and freshman Alex Law each recorded a goal and an assist, sophomore Luisa Welcke scored her second power-play goal of the weekend and senior Madison Cardaci closed it out with an empty-netter.
With the win, the Terriers jumped ahead of the Friars in the Hockey East standings and ended a seven-game winless streak (0-4-3) against them. BU moved to .500 both overall (8-8-2) and in league play (6-6-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers wasted little time establishing a lead, scoring on their first shot on goal.
- Sophomore Maeve Kelly used the boards to get a pass up to freshman Ella Huntley, setting up a 2-on-1 rush with Yuhn, who shot off a pass from Huntley and scored from the left circle just 1:28 into the contest.
- Providence had two power-play chances in the opening period and used the latter to make it a 1-1 contest with a goal from Reichen Kirchmair with 55.2 seconds left.
- BU regained the lead early in the second as Law sent the puck to the low slot from the left corner and it deflected to Foulem, who was able to punch it in at the near crease at the 3:13 mark.
- The Terriers took a 3-1 advantage less than three minutes later soon after they had a power play expire as Yuhn set up Law in the left slot, where the freshman wristed a shot to the top right corner of the goal.
- BU took three penalties in the first seven minutes of the third period but the visitors were unable to take advantage of those power-play opportunities.
- The Terriers got a late power play and cashed in on it as Luisa and Lilli executed a perfect give-and-go initially set up by a pass from senior Andi Calderone.
- Luisa tipped in a return pass from her sister for her second power-play goal of the weekend with 3:49 left in regulation.
- Cardaci created the 5-1 final when she scored an empt-netter with 16.1 seconds remaining.
