STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team shutout the UMass Lowell Riverhawks Friday night at the Toscano Family Ice Forum. Sophomore Tristan Fraser scored, while Ethan Haider made 22 saves in the victory.
The Huskies and Riverhawks both had opportunities to break the deadlock in the first period, but both goaltenders made timely saves to keep the game scoreless. UConn was outshot by UMass Lowell in the first period, but Senior goaltender Ethan Haider made 10 saves as both teams entered the period break scoreless.
The Huskies broke through in the second period to take the 1-0 lead. UConn's continuous pressure paid off as a turnover by the Riverhawks found Tristan Fraser, who skated in and fired the puck past the goalie for the goal. With the one goal lead, the Huskies defense and goaltending shined as they were able to hold UMass Lowell scoreless through two periods.
In the third period, the Huskies continued to pressure and had multiple scoring chances to increase their lead. One of the best chances for the Huskies came midway through the third period when Chase Bradley skated through around the defenders and fired a puck that rang off the post and back into play. UConn's defense continued to shine in the third period, only allowing four total shots in the period all of which were saved by Ethan Haider. With under two minutes remaining, UMass Lowell pulled their goalie for an extra skater, and with the goalie pulled, sophomore Jake Percival was able to beat the defense for the loose puck and score the empty net goal to seal the win for the Huskies.
