NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Boston University women's ice hockey team dropped a 7-2 decision to Minnesota State in the championship game of the Smashville Collegiate Showcase on Sunday at the Ford Ice Center.

Despite scoring the first goal of the game in the second period, BU fell behind MSU when it scored four unanswered goals through the middle frame. The Mavericks added two goals to their lead in the third before BU could score its second. BU could not complete the comeback as MSU added a power-play goal late in the third to secure its 7-2 win.

Junior Christina Vote and sophomore Brooke Disher found the back of the net for the Terriers. Senior Lacey Martin, juniors Maggie Hanzel, Liv Haag and freshman Jackson Kinsler all picked up assists in the loss.


HOW IT HAPPENED

- No one could find the back of the net in the first period.

- A shot from Martin was tipped in by Vote at the 5:53 mark in the second to give BU a 1-0 lead with the power-play goal.

- The Mavericks scored four times within seven minutes to jump ahead 4-1 by the end of the second frame.

- BU switched goaltenders but MSU carried its momentum into the third period and scored short-handed at the 1:25 mark.

- The Mavericks' 6-1 lead came just 3:31 into the final frame.

- Kinsler and Haag set up Disher who fired off a shot from the left point to score BU's second and final goal.

- MSU put the exclamation point on its win with a power-play goal at 13:22 to close out the scoring at 7-2.


GAME NOTES

- MSU outshot BU 36 to 21.

- Both teams had one power-play goal apiece with BU going 1-for-3 and MSU going 1-for-4.

- BU won 26 faceoffs compared to MSU's 27.

- Hanzel blocked four of BU's nine blocked shots.

- Junior Ani FitzGerald won 10 faceoffs for BU.

- Graduate student Alexa Matses made 25 saves through the first two periods.

- Freshman Mari Pietersen made five saves in the final frame.
