NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The UConn women's hockey team fell to no.7 Quinnipiac by a final of 4-2 Friday evening in the first round of the Nutmeg Classic. Quinnipiac scored two unanswered goals in the third period to secure the win.
Quinnipiac opened the scoring early in the first period as Julia Nearis collected the loose puck and after skating past a couple UConn defenders, she fired the puck past junior goaltender Tia Chan for the goal. The Huskies were unable to find the equalizer in the first period as they entered the break trailing by one.
The Huskies found their stride in the second period as they scored back-to-back goals to take the lead. The Huskies first goal came when graduate student Claire Peterson collected the loose puck and fired the one timer past Logan Angers for the goal. Shortly after, graduate student Camryn Wong fired the puck bar down to give UConn the one goal lead. The Bobcats responded late in the second period to tie the game at two. Despite the offensive explosion, neither team was able to take the lead before the end of the period.
The third period was all Quinnipiac as the Bobcats scored two goals to secure the win. Julia Nearis scored her second of the game early in the third period to take the lead. The Huskies attempted to even the score, but Logan Angers shut down UConn making 12 of her 32 saves in the period. Shortly after, Quinnipiac scored their fourth goal of the game to take the two-goal lead. UConn pulled Tia Chan in favor for an extra skater, but the Quinnipiac defense stood strong preventing a goal and securing the 4-2 win.
