BOSTON - Sophomore defenseman Lane Hutson recorded his first collegiate hat trick and classmate Devin Kaplan evened the score at 4-4 with 2:17 remaining in regulation, but the No. 9/8 Boston University men's ice hockey team fell to No. 3/4 North Dakota, 5-4, in overtime.
BU (4-3-1) battled back from three different deficits to force overtime, but North Dakota (5-2-1) scored 20 seconds into the extra session to secure a split of the first weekend series between the perennial powers since 2013.
Kaplan finished the night with two points as he assisted on Hutson's second goal of the game. Freshman Macklin Celebrini also had two points thanks to a pair of assists. Junior Ty Gallagher notched an assist for the second straight night, as did freshman Shane Lachance. Senior Dylan Peterson followed last night's goal with a helper on Saturday, with sophomore Ryan Greene and graduate student Cade Webber each adding an assist as well in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU thought it had the first goal of the game during a five-minute power play, but after video review the play was adjudged to be offside.
- North Dakota struck first at 15:36 of the opening period, but Hutson answered with 1:26 remaining in the frame to even the score. He collected a pass from Gallagher, walked across the top of the offensive zone, faked out a defender and then sent a wrist shot past Ludvig Persson (XX saves).
- The Fighting Hawks scored just 1:01 into the second stanza to regain their one-goal edge before Jayden Perron doubled the lead at 8:27 with a power-play goal.
- Hutson then scored twice in a span of 2:08 to bring BU level. His first goal came on a nifty give-and-go with Celebrini. Hutson dished the puck down low to Celebrini and then cut diagonally across the slot to the left post. Celebrini found Hutson with a terrific pass and the sophomore defender one-timed the puck past Persson.
- Then, with 32.2 seconds remaining in the period, Lachance got the puck behind the net and feathered a pass out to Hutson in the slot. His shot slipped through traffic in front of Persson and into the back of the net.
- Ben Strinden gave UND its third lead of the game at 5:35 of the third period.
- BU continued to press and its hard work paid off when Kaplan deftly redirected Webber's shot from the left point to tie the game at 4-4.
- North Dakota won the opening faceoff of overtime and scored on its first rush into the Terrier zone.
