BOSTON - Thanks to senior Lacey Martin's first collegiate hat trick and an overtime goal from classmate Tamara Giaquinto, the Boston University women's ice hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Merrimack with a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.
After Merrimack opened the scoring in the eighth minute of the middle period, Martin tied the game and then put BU ahead in a span of four minutes.
The Warriors drew even at 6:49 of the third before Martin completed her hat trick just 67 seconds later to put BU back on top at 3-2.
With only 12 seconds left in regulation, the visitors forced overtime by scoring with an extra attacker. In the extra session, Giaquinto sniped a shot from the right circle at the 1:59 mark to lead BU to the win and the sweep.
The Terriers have now won four straight games - their longest streak since February 2020 - and now stand at 4-2-1 overall and 3-2-0 in Hockey East play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Each team had a power-play opportunity in a back-and-forth first period but the teams headed into the first intermission scoreless.
- Merrimack opened the scoring at the 7:57 mark of the middle period when Celine Tedenby finished off a give-and-go rush with Emily Oosterveld.
- BU nearly tied it up minutes later but a goal was waved off due to a high stick.
- Just seconds after the wave-off, the Terriers got the equalizer on Martin's fourth goal of the season.
- Freshman Alex Law chased down a rebound and then stickhandled around defenders behind the Merrimack goal before curling towards the crease and sliding the puck to an open Martin by the right post with 9:17 left in the frame.
- Matses swallowed up an open point-blank Merrimack bid in the slot with just under eight minutes left in the second to keep the game tied.
- BU took the lead on a power play at 13:15 of the second when Martin poked in a rebound at the left post following bids by junior Christina Vote and senior Andi Calderone.
- The Warriors made it a 2-2 affair with 14:11 left in regulation when Sophie McKinley followed up her own miss after her initial attempt rang off the left post.
- The deadlock did not last long, however, as Martin cleaned up a rebound from a show by Law and scored from the left circle to complete the hat trick and make it 3-2 in BU's favor.
- Merrimack pulled goaltender Calli Hogarth in favor of an extra attacker and it paid off when a loose puck led to a slot shot from Mary Edmonds that eluded Alexa Matses in the final moments of regulation.
- In overtime, a nifty neutral-zone backhand pass by Vote sent Giaquinto up the right parallel with a Warrior skater and the senior defender whistled a shot over the right shoulder of Hogarth to end the game.
GAME NOTES
- This is BU's longest win streak since it closed out the 2019-20 regular season with four straight wins to cap an eight game unbeaten streak (7-0-1).
- Matses made 12 saves in goal to earn her second win in as many days.
- BU held a 27-15 shot advantage for the game.
- The Terriers went 1-for-3 on the power play while Warriors came up empty on their two chances.
- Vote, Yuhn and Law had each had two assists in the contest.
