STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak, winning game two vs. New Hampshire 4-0, Saturday afternoon at the Toscano Family Ice Forum. Junior Megan Warrener, in her first start of the season, posted 26 saves in the shutout, while four different Huskies scored including two shorthanded goals to secure the conference win.
The Huskies wasted no time on Saturday as the first goal came six minutes into the game. Graduate student Captain Coryn Tormala found the loose puck and passed it across the crease to sophomore Christina Walker who fired it on the wide-open net. Two minutes later the Huskies doubled their lead as freshman Ashley Allard fought through a scrum in front of the net and pushed the puck into the goal for her second career goal, and UConn's second goal of the night.
After the fireworks from the first period, New Hampshire came out in the second looking to cut into the Huskies lead. After a penalty on UConn, New Hampshire was looking for their first goal of the night on the power play. While on the penalty kill, senior sophomore Megan Woodworth collected a blocked shot and while all alone on the breakaway faked the shot and laid it off for senior Kathryn Stockdale who scored the shorthanded goal to give UConn the three-goal lead, the Huskies defense shined. The Huskies only allowed four shots on goal in the second period, all of which were saved by junior goaltender Megan Warrener.
The Huskies did not stop after the second period as they were able to score one final goal in the third frame to secure the win. Once again, the Huskies were forced to play a skater down due to a holding penalty by freshman Livvy Dewar. With time running down on the penalty, senior Jada Habisch collected a cleared puck, and after making one deke, scored the backhand shorthanded goal to give UConn the four-goal lead. Megan Warrener continued to lockdown the Huskies net, saving all 10 shots faced in the period to secure the shutout win. In her first start of the season Warrener finished with 26 saves.
UConn will be back in action beginning Friday, October 27 as they welcome Providence College to the Toscano Family Ice Forum. Puck drop is scheduled for 6pm and can be streamed live on ESPN+.
