PROVIDENDE, R.I. - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team defeated Providence College in a comeback win by a score of 4-3.
The game started with three quick goals by Providence College within the first nine minutes. Maine outshot the Friars 12-8 in the first period, but struggled to get the puck behind Providence netminder Mireille Kingsley until the very end of the period. Adrianna Van De Leest scored on the power play, firing the puck over Kingley's shoulder to put Maine on the board. Jamie Grinder picked up the assist.
The Black Bears came out flying in the second period with Alyssa Wruble scoring on a shot through the five-hole just over one minute in. Assists were tallied by linemates Sam Morrison and Mira Seregely.
The Black Bears dug deep in the third period as Ida Kuoppala scored the game-tying goal on a 2-on-1 with a pass from Rahel Enzler. Kuoppala picked up her second of the game, on a tip-in from Elisa Morphy's shot, for the game-winner. Rahel Enzler also assisted the final goal.
Maine was 1/3 on the power play, and killed off all three penalties successfully.
Senior goaltender Anna LaRose picked up in the win with 20 saves.
The Black Bears and Friars face off again on Saturday at 2 pm at Schneider Arena.
