WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team fell in overtime to Union College, 3-2, in their season opener.
Holy Cross came out strong to start the game, scoring two goals in the first six minutes of play. Senior co-captain Lilly Feeney got the ball rolling with a goal at the 57 second mark assisted by freshman Emily Crovo and senior co-captain Bryn Saarela. Just four minutes later freshman Reghan Chadwick netted her first career goal converting on a power-play. Chadwick was assisted by juniors Emilie Fortunato and Carmen Elliot.
The Chargers cut Holy Cross's lead in half with less than four minutes left in the third period after pulling their goalkeeper. With 27 seconds left Union equalized from a power-play goal to send the game into overtime. Union scored at 3:49 in overtime to defeat Holy Cross.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders opened the scoring just 57 seconds into the first period off a goal from Feeney assisted by Crovo and Saarela
- Holy Cross extended its lead to 2-0 at the 5:55 mark from a power-play goal scored by Chadwick assisted by Fortunato and Elliot
- Union cut the Crusaders' lead in half in the 3rd period at 16:44 and equalized at 19:32 with a 6-4 power-play goal
- Union scored the winning goal at 3:49 in overtime
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Chadwick scored her first career goal
- Crovo had her first career assist
- Madison Beck made 27 saves to 30 shots faced on the day
