ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team defeated the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, 1-0, on Friday evening in the Alfond Arena.  

The Black Bears outshot the Seawolves 20-5 in the first 20:00, but the game was deadlocked in a scoreless tie as the opening period ended.  

Period number two went the way of the first. Neither team could find the back of the net, but it would not be the case for the third and final period.  

First Goal (1-0 Maine): David Breazeale fired a shot that was deflected by an Alaska Anchorage defender. The puck settled on Thomas Freel's stick. After hitting a post earlier in the period, the freshman forward did not squander this opportunity. With 00:20 left in regulation, Freel found the back of the net and secured the first of 2023 for the Black Bears.  

Notes: Victor Ostman saved 25 shots and posted his third shutout of the year in net for the Black Bears, while Joey Lamoreaux stopped 40 shots between the pipes for Alaska Anchorage.

  Maine went 0 for 3 on the power play, as the Seawolves were 0-2 on its player advantages.  

Next: The two teams will return to the ice tomorrow, Saturday, January 7 for the series finale. Puck drop for the Saturday evening contest is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
