HANOVER, N.H. - Freshman Bennett Schimek scored twice and added an assist as the No. 12 Providence College men's hockey team downed No. 6 Merrimack, 6-1, in the Ledyard Classic Championship Game on Saturday (Dec. 31) in Hanover, N.H.

NOTES

- Providence went to work early as Bennett Schimek forced a turnover and beat Ollas under the glove for a 1-0 lead at the 5:49 mark.

- Nick Poisson registered back-to-back goals, the second on a power play to give Providence a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

- Parker Ford netted his second goal of the weekend with a great individual effort on the penalty kill for his seventh goal of the year.

- Matt Copponi got the Warriors on the board with a power-play goal at 18:36.

- Schimek answered with 19 seconds left in the period, tallying his second goal of the day after finishing off his own rebound.

- Cam McDonald capped off the scoring with a shorthanded empty-net goal with 5:20 left in regulation.

- Craig Needham added two assists and finished the weekend with three points on a goal and two assists.

- Max Crozier continues to lead the Friars in scoring after posting four assists on the weekend. He now has two goals and 16 assists this season.

- Providence scored three shorthanded goals on the weekend and now have six overall this season.

- Poisson has five goals over his last four games, while Schimek accumulated four goals and two assists over the last three games.

- Philip Svedebäck stopped 39-of-40 shots he faced this weekend.

- The Friars have now won back-to-back Ledyard Classic titles after winning the tournament back in 2018.
