HANOVER, N.H. - Freshman netminder Philip Svedebäck made 20 saves for his first career NCAA shutout as the No. 12 Providence College men's hockey team opened the 33rd Ledyard Classic with a 3-0 win over Yale on Friday (Dec. 30).

NOTES

- The Friars dominated possession in the first period, outshooting the Bulldogs by a 17-3 margin, but the teams were scoreless after 20 minutes.

- Providence's Patrick Moynihan was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for contact to the head with 4:00 remaining in the opening period.

- Craig Needham gave Providence a 1-0 lead just 46 seconds into the second period, as he buried a shorthanded goal off an odd-man rush for his third tally of the season. Max Crozier and Connor Kelley earned the assists on the play.

- Providence had multiple opportunities on the power play, including a full 2:00 of 5-on-3 but couldn't convert on the four second period power play chances.

- Svedebäck came up strong for the Friars as Yale made a push early in the third period.

- Providence got some insurance as Bennett Schimek notched his fourth goal of the season off a scramble in front to make it a 2-0 game at 11:28.

- Parker Ford tacked on at 13:14 with his sixth strike of the season to make a three-goal game.

- Crozier now leads the team in scoring with 16 points and in assists with 14.

- Needham's shorthanded goal was the fourth scored by the Friars this season.

- Schimek has now scored in back-to-back games (2-1-3).
