WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team defeated #14 Vermont 2-1, in their conference opener. The Crusaders improve to 2-1-0 and 1-0-0 in Hockey East standings while the Catamounts move to 2-1-0 (0-1-0 Hockey East).

Senior forward Carly Beniek scored the game winning goal in the first period, her first of the season.


HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Crusaders opened the scoring 8:47 into the game. Senior Mary Edmonds put the puck in the net off a rebound. This marks Edmonds second goal and third point of the year.

- Edmonds was assisted by senior Darci Johal, her second assist.

- Carly Beniek continued the scoring for the Crusaders a few minutes later. Beniek was assisted by sophomore Michela Lio and freshman Casey Borgiel. Lio and Borgiel each earn their first point of the year from the assist.

- Vermont's top-scorer Theresa Schafzahl managed to cut the lead in half with a goal late in the second period.

- The Holy Cross defense, led by sophomore Emma Min and senior Kailey Langefels battled for the remainder of regulation to maintain the lead. Min tallied five blocks on the night, followed by Langefels and Carmen Elliot who had three apiece.


BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

- Edmonds now leads the team in goals (3), alongside freshman Alexia Moreau.

- Johal ranks second in total assists, with teammate Millie Sirum.

- Junior goaltender Madison Beck tallied 34 saves on the night. After two starts, she averages 2.0 goals-against with a save percentage of .945.

- Holy Cross stays in Worcester to resume their two-game set against Vermont on Sunday, Oct. 9. Puck drop is slated for 3 p.m.
