BOSTON, Mass. - The Boston University women's hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Union on Saturday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.

The Dutchwomen got on the board in the first period, but senior Nadia Mattivi made it a 1-1 game a few minutes later. The visitors recorded the game-winner later in the first and added to their lead late in the third to create the 3-1 final. Freshman Sydney Healey and senior Julia Nearis tallied assists on the Mattivi goal.

Sophomore goalie Callie Shanahan made her first appearance of the season and recorded 32 saves and kept the Dutchwomen scoreless in the second period.

BU moves to 1-1-0 while Union moves to 3-3-0.


HOW IT HAPPENED

- Union recorded the first goal of the night when Carmen Merlo sent one in the net with help from Greta Kropp and Emily King.

- Mattivi lit the lamp with her first goal of the season 8:54 into the first period when she caught Union goaltender Sophie Matsoukas out of position and scored on a wraparound to even the score at 1-1.

- The Dutchwomen regained the lead with a power-play goal by Emma Hebert from Maren Friday and Carmen Merlo.

- The second period went scoreless with BU outshooting Union, 12-8, with four of BU's shots coming on its one power play chance in the game.

- Union went on the power play twice in the third, but the Terriers were successful on the penalty kill both times.

- At 15:25 in the third, Union added insurance to their lead and closed out scoring with an Ashley Adams goal with an assist from Paige Greco.

- The Terriers played with an empty net for the final 1:24 of the game but could not find the back of the net.


GAME NOTES

- BU won 33 faceoffs with freshman Clara Yuhn leading the way with 12.

- Nearis, Healey and junior Lacey Martin finished the game plus-1 for the Terriers.

- BU outshot the Dutchwomen 38-35 in a closely contested three periods.

- Matsoukas made 37 saves in the game.

- Union went 1-for-4 on the power play while BU went 0-for-1.
