Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior captain Logan Cockerill scored two goals, including the game-winner, to help lift the Boston University men's ice hockey team to a 6-4 victory at No. 9/8 UMass on Tuesday night at Mullins Center.

Graduate student Max Kaufman and juniors Matt Brown, Ethan Phillips and Robert Mastrosimone each lit the lamp as well, with Brown and Kaufman each adding an assist to complete two-point nights. Junior Wilmer Skoog, senior Ty Amonte, freshman Ty Gallagher, junior Sam Stevens and freshman Brian Carrabes all added one assist apiece. Sophomore Drew Commesso made 32 saves, including 14 in the third period, to preserve the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- BU opened the scoring just 10:53 into the proceedings when Kaufman and Cockerill combined for a pretty give-and-go at the net, with Cockerill eventually firing a wrister past Matt Murray (14 saves)

- Brown pushed the lead to 2-0 at 16:49 of the period. Stevens collected the puck at his own half-wall and fired an outlet pass to Brown, who skated in on a 2-on-1 and uncorked a shot inside the far post.

- Mastrosimone gave the Terriers a 3-0 lead with just seven seconds remaining in the first. Skoog won an offensive-zone draw back to Brown, who held shielded the puck from his defender with smooth skating before circling behind the net and backhanding the puck on goal. The rebound caromed right to Mastrosimone at the right post and he knocked it home for his team-leading ninth goal of the year.

- Phillips made it 4-0 early in the second stanza. Gallagher made a great play to keep the puck in the zone, which allowed Phillips to glove it down to himself, make a quick but effective move to separate himself from his defender and then send the puck top shelf for his third goal in two games.

- The Minutemen responded with two goals to cut the deficit in half, but Cockerill regained the Terriers' two goal edge at 10:49 of the second. Amonte won a draw and then pushed the puck forward to Cockerill, who roofed a backhander past Luke Pavicich (eight saves).

- UMass responded just 18 seconds after Cockerill's goal to make it a 5-3 game entering the final 20 minutes.

- The Minutemen took advantage of a fortuitous bounce to cut the Terriers' lead to 5-4 with 10:31 to play, but Kaufman sealed the win with an empty-netter in the final minute.
