Maine Defeated By Alaska, 6-2

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks, 6-2, on Friday evening in the Alfond Arena.

First Goal (1-0 Nanooks): With 8:16 left in the first period, Brady Risk gave the visiting Nanooks an early 1-0 lead. Caleb Hite forced a turnover deep in Maine's zone before finding Risk. The Black Bears' trailed by one early in the non-conference contest.

Second Goal (1-1): While on their first power play opportunity of the evening, the Black Bears tied the snowy Friday night game at one goal apiece. Adam Dawe had his original shot saved before the senior found space between the netminder's legs. At the first break, the first game of 2022 was tied, 1-1.

Third Goal (2-1 Nanooks): 24 seconds into the second period, Risk scored his second goal of the evening. Garrett Pyke fired a shot from the corner that was deflected by Risk. The errant puck found its way into the Maine net. Early in the second, the Black Bears trailed by a goal.

Fourth Goal (3-1 Nanooks): Two minutes later, Risk completed his hat trick. Didrik Henbrant played the puck ahead to his streaking linemate. The freshmen forward did the rest and lit the lamp for the third time in less than 23 minutes.

Fifth Goal (4-1 Nanooks): Alaska Fairbanks found the back of the net once again with a goal from Payton Matsui. The goal once again was a product of a Nanook fast break. 4:31 into the second period, Maine trailed 4-1.

Sixth Goal (5-1 Nanooks): The top line scored once again for the visitors from Alaska Fairbanks. Filip Fornaa Svensson fired a shot that deflected off the back of a Maine defender and directly back to the forward. He composed himself and fired another shot, this time finding the back of the net. At the end of two, Maine trailed 5-1.

Seventh Goal (6-1 Nanooks): Simon Falk scored in the opening minute of the third period to give his squad a five goal lead.

Eighth Goal (6-2 Nanooks): Cleaning up the mess in front of Alaska's net, Edward Lindelow scored his first goal of the season. Jack Quinlivan and Simon Butala chipped in with assists. It was the final goal of the night as Maine dropped their first game of the year.


Notes:

Matthew Thiessen stopped 10 shots for the Black Bears, while Connor Androolewicz made his collegiate debut for Maine and stonewalled 11 Nanook attempts. Gustavs Grigals tallied 37 saves for Alaska Fairbanks.

Maine went 1 for 5 on its power play opportunities, as the Nanooks were 0-2 on its player advantages.

The Black Bears blocked four shots and won 32 face-offs as a team.
