CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior assistant captain Jack McBain registered his first career hat trick and 19th-ranked Boston College skated past Maine 6-2 on Thursday night at Kelley Rink to open a two-game series.

The Eagles improved to 7-5-1 overall and 5-3-0 in Hockey East play, while the Black Bears fell to 1-9-1 (1-6-0 HEA).

McBain scored twice in the first period and completed his hat trick early in the third, increasing his league-leading point total to 19 on nine goals and 10 assists. Graduate student Brandon Kruse had the primary assist on all three goals, extending his point streak to seven games.

Colby Ambrosio and Jack St. Ivany each had a pair of assists in the victory. Marc McLaughlin buried his NCAA-best fifth power play goal of the year, while Casey Carreau and Mike Posma netted goals.

Eric Dop stopped 23 of the 25 Black Bear shots he faced for his sixth win of the season.

Carreau and McBain scored 52 seconds apart less than three minutes into the contest to put Boston College up 2-0. Kruse then slid a centering pass from behind the net for a McBain one-timer at 10:25 for a 3-0 cushion.

After a Maine goal from Grant Hebert, McLaughlin pushed the lead back to three at 7:06 of the second when his snap shot beat Victor Ostman blocker side from the slot.

McBain's third tally of the night came just 32 seconds into the third on another Kruse centering feed from below the goal line. Posma capped the scoring on a rebound following a net drive from Ambrosio at 12:26 of the final frame.

The teams close the series on Friday night at 7 p.m. on NESNplus from Conte Forum.
