HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES
Six Hockey East alumnae will be heading to the 2022 Olympics in Beijing with Team USA, including Boston College’s Cayla Barnes, Alex Carpenter and Megan Keller, Boston University’s Jesse Compher, the first-ever Terrier named to the U.S. Olympic squad, and Northeastern’s Kendall Coyne-Schofield and Hayley Scamurra. Additionally, Boston College Associate Head Coach Courtney Kennedy will be behind the U.S. bench as an assistant coach.
Providence earned a 3-1, come-from-behind victory over Vermont to end 2021 in style. Sara Hjalmarsson netted two goals, including the game-winning goal at four-on-four and a highlight-reel, shorthanded, game-tying marker that earned the No. 2 spot on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays while Sandra Abstreiter stopped 39 of 40 shots she saw.
Vermont’s Sydney Correa made her collegiate debut last weekend, making 32 saves over two Hockey East games against Providence and Maine. On Sunday, she kicked out 14 shots to earn her first career win and shutout against the Black Bears in a 3-0 decision.
Boston University participated in the Battle at the Burgh on Saturday
afternoon at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Pittsburgh, a
showcase event featuring the Terriers, Syracuse, Penn State, and
St. Cloud State. The first-ever meeting of BU and Syracuse ended in
a 3-3 draw.
HOCKEY EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sara Hjalmarsson - Providence
Sara Hjalmarsson (Sr., F; Bankeryd, Sweden) netted two goals,
including the game-winning goal at four-on-four and a highlight-reel,
shorthanded, game-tying marker that earned the No. 2 spot on
SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays. Hjalmarsson fired five shots on net and
won eight of 14 face offs to help power Providence to a come-from-behind victory over Vermont on Friday.
PRO AMBITIONS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Sydney Correa - Vermont
Sydney Correa (Fr., G; Georgetown, Mass.) made her collegiate
debut last weekend, making 32 saves over two Hockey East games
against Providence and Maine. On Sunday, she kicked out 14 shots
to earn her first career win and shutout against the Black Bears in a
3-0 decision.
HOCKEY EAST DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Ellice Murphy - Vermont
Ellice Murphy (Sr., D; Roseau, Minn.) scored her first goal of the season
and third of her career Sunday, a shorthanded tally to give Vermont a 2-0
lead midway through the second period. The senior anchored a Vermont
defense that allowed just 14 shots on net and allowed zero goals Sunday in
a 3-0 win over Maine, beginning the Catamounts’ 2022 home schedule with
a league victory.
HOCKEY EAST GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Sandra Abstreiter - Providence
Sandra Abstreiter (Gr., G; Freising, Germany) stopped 39 of 40
shots she saw on Friday in the Friars’ final game of 2021, backboning Providence to a 3-1 win over Vermont in league play. She made
17 stops in the first period alone, saved 11 of 12 shots in the second,
and shut the door with 12 saves in the final frame.
HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS
Lacey Martin, BU (So., F; Minnetonka, Minn.) Tallied the game-tying goal and also had the primary assist on the Terriers’ opening goal in a 3-3 tie with Syracuse on Saturday in a neutral-site contest in Pittsburgh.
