Tournament Seeding To Be Decided in Final Weekend of Play

HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

No. 1 Boston College, the top-ranked team for much of the season, claimed its 18th regular-season crown on Sunday with a 1-0 win over No. 17 New Hampshire. The Eagles secure the top seed in the Hockey East Tournament and will host a quarterfinal match up on Saturday, March 16.

The Eagles are on a 12-game winning streak in Hockey East play, the longest such streak since 2012-13 when Boston College also won 12 in a row.

No. 2 Boston University, idle during its bye week, secures the #2 seed in the Hockey East Tournament.

Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Providence will battle for playoff seeding in the final week of regular season play with two games each left in the regular season. The four squads remain in contention for byes into the quarterfinals and home ice in both the Opening Round and quarterfinal games. Maine and UMass will square off head-to-head in two games in Orono with both Hockey East Tournament seeding and Pairwise ranking implications on the line.

Vermont and UConn are set for a Thursday clash that could potentially decide home ice Opening Round. A win in regulation for Vermont would ensure hosting duties for the Catamounts on Wednesday, March 13.

Ryan Ufko - Massachusetts

Ryan Ufko (Jr., D; Smithtown, N.Y.) led Hockey East in goals (3) and points (4) during a 2-0-0 week, which included two overtime game winners over UMass Lowell. He finished with a plus-two rating and four blocks. In Friday’s 2-1 OT road win at UMass Lowell, blocked three shots and scored the deciding goal in the extra frame of his 100th career game. On Saturday, he factored in three of four goals in a come-from-behind OT victory, including setting up a shorthanded goal and scoring on the power play in the third period to tie the score at three. He capped his weekend with another power play goal in overtime to seal the win for the Minutemen over the River Hawks.

Dylan Hryckowian - Northeastern

Dylan Hryckowian (Fr., F; L’Île-Bizard, Que.) registered a four-point weekend in a split against UConn with one goal and three primary assists. On Friday, he helped the Huskies erase a three-goal deficit with two primary helpers and then scored the game’s opening goal and assisted on the second in Saturday’s road win. He put three shots on net, had one block and finished with a plus-one rating. He currently has five points in three consecutive games.

Eamon Powell - Boston College

Eamon Powell (Sr., D; Marcellus, N.Y.) potted the game-winning goal of a 1-0 victory on senior night at Conte Forum Sunday, lifting the Eagles to the Hockey East regular season championship. He also had an assist on Friday, running his point streak to 11 games (3g, 14a), the second-longest point streak in the NCAA by a defender this year.

Hugo Ollas - Merrimack

Hugo Ollas (Jr., G; Linköping, Sweden) stopped 74 of 78 shots he faced in a 1-1-0 weekend against No. 10 Providence, including a 46-save outing on Saturday to deliver Merrimack a 2-1 victory at home. He kicked out 28 of 31 shots on Thursday in a 4-2 setback. His 74 saves were the second most of any NCAA netminder last week.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Ryan Leonard, BC (Fr., F; Amherst, Mass.) pushed his point streak to 17 games (15g, 16a) with a pair of goals, including the game-winning strike, in Friday’s 5-3 win at No. 17 New Hampshire and the primary assist on the only goal of the game in Sunday’s 1-0 victory. The six points delivered the Eagles their 18th Hockey East regular season championship.

Jacob Fowler, BC (Fr., G; Melbourne, Fla.) picked up two wins in regulation to backbone the Eagles to the 18th regular season championship in program history, the most in Hockey East. The rookie made 55 saves on 58 shots, including a 27-save shutout on Sunday to secure the top-seed in the Hockey East Tournament for the Eagles.

Matthew Wood, UConn (So., F; Lethbridge, Alta.) Powered the Huskies to a 4-3 win on Friday at Northeastern, netting a hat trick and the game-winning goal. He added an assist on Saturday for a four point weekend.

Harrison Scott, Maine (Jr., F; San Jose, Calif.) Netted a goal in each of Maine’s games at Vermont.

Aydar Suniev, UMass (Fr., F; Kazan, Russia) Had a three-point game in UMass’ 4-3 overtime win over UMass Lowell on Saturday to complete a 2-0-0 week. The rookie tied the score at two in the second period with his 12th goal of the season and went on to register assists on both the game-tying power-play goal in the third period and the game-winning power-play goal in overtime.

Jak Vaarwerk, UML (Fr., F; Clarence, N.Y.) In Saturday’s game at UMass, Vaarwerk scored the team’s first two goals, unassisted, to help the the River Hawks force overtime. He also went 18-10 from the faceoff circle. The freshman now ranks third on the River Hawks in both assists (10) and points (15).

Isac Jonsson, UML (Jr., D; Angelholm, Sweden) The defenseman finished a two-game series with UMass with one assist and one goal for two points and suited up in his 100th career game for the River Hawks. In Friday’s match up, Jonsson assisted the game-tying goal to help force overtime by putting a puck on net that was deflected in. In Saturday’s game two, Jonsson scored the go-ahead goal on a power play in the second period.

Justin Hryckowian, NU (Jr., F; L’Île-Bizard, Que.) Recorded a four-point weekend with two goals and two assists, including a power-play tally in a split weekend with UConn. He totaled 10 shots and five blocks and finished with 31 faceoff wins, including a season-high 24 in game one. He has now recorded seven games with multi-point efforts in his last nine outings.

Vinny Borgesi, NU (So., D; Philadelphia, Pa.) Posted a two-point weekend against UConn, tallying one goal and one assist. He collected a team-high seven shots on Friday and finished with three blocks.

Cameron Whitehead, NU (Fr., G; Orleans, Ont.) Finished with a .909 save percentage over the weekend against UConn as he picked up his 16th win of the year on Saturday, making 60 total saves in 118 minutes played. He recorded his 18th 30+ save game in a 4-2 win in game two, tallying 38 saves.

Cal Kiefiuk, PC (Gr., F; Macomb, Mich.) Tallied three points over a split weekend against Merrimack last weekend. On Thursday in Providence’s 4-2 win, he posted a goal and an assist. On Friday, he tallied an assist and finished the weekend with a plus-two rating.
