BOSTON - Veronika Pettey secured her first two points of the season with a goal and assist, while Katy Knoll netted the game winner to lead No. 4 Northeastern (7-1-1) over No. 7 Providence (9-3-1), 4-1, on Friday inside Matthews Arena. Northeastern outshot Providence 16-3 in the third period.
Answering the call early in the first, Chloe Aurard captured her first short-handed goal of the season to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The Huskies came out firing in the second period as Knoll tallied her fourth goal of the season to increase the lead to two. The Friars would close out the second period by cutting the Huskies lead in half with a power-play goal in the final seconds.
The final period belonged to the Huskies, dominating play and taking 13 more shots than the Friars, including goals from Pettey (13:41) and an empty net goal, her first of her career, by Molly Griffin.
Northeastern hits the road to Providence, R.I. tomorrow to finish off the home-and-home series inside Schneider Arena at 12 p.m. The game can be watched on College Sports Live.
