How it Happened
- 1st Period: junior captain Jessica Bonfe (Woodbury, Minn.) wasted little time getting the Warriors on the board. She skated around the net, tucking the back-handed shot inside the post for a 1-0 lead at 1:16 of the opening period. Penn State had a chance to tie late in the period, but the shot by Caileah Forrest clanked off the pipe. Merrimack had a pair of power plays, including one with three minutes left. Junior captain Paige Voight (St. Michael, Minn.).
- 2nd Period: Sophomore goalie Lea-Kristine Demers (Repentigny, Quebec) made a left pad save on a back-handed shot by Katie Rankin with just over three minutes gone in the period. With just over five minutes gone, she smothered the shot from right in front of the crease. With 9:08 left in the period, Meike Meilleur had a wide-open shot from below the dots, but Demers came up with a huge save to keep it 1-0 in favor of Merrimack. Demers made three saves on Penn State's first power-play in the final two minutes of the period to preserve the shutout.
- 3rd Period: Penn State evened the game at one four minutes into the period on the power play. Bella Sutton shot from the point with Brooke Madsen tipping it wide of the net. However, Natalie Heising was right there and fired the puck to the upper left corner. Merrimack had a great chance on a 5-on-3 late in the period. Freshman Megan Fergusson (Kitchener, Ontario) found a loose puck around the front of the net, slapping it up by the right post. However, Daniella Paniccia was there to cover up with a crowd in front.
- OT Period: The Warriors went on the power-play with 3:15 left in the extra-time period. Junior Felila Manu (Anchorage, Alaska) tapped a pass to Sorensen along the boards. Sorensen sent a rocket towards the net to beat the keeper and give the Warriors the overtime victory.
