STORRS, Conn. - Briana Colangelo scored two goals including a game-winner in overtime to lift the Huskies past No. 9 Providence, 3-2, to extend UConn's win streak to four games. The Huskies four-game streak is the longest for the program since the 2014-2015 season.
Despite being outshot 38-26 in the contest, the Huskies capitalized on their opportunities. Trailing 1-0 in the second period, Natalie Snodgrass teed up a shot that was deflected in by Theresa Knutson to even the score, 1-1. The tally was the ninth of the season for Knutson.
Late in the second period, the Huskies took their first lead of the game when Cydnee Cook rifled a shot on goal that was perfectly deflected off the stick of Leah Lum and Colangelo reacted with a quick score from the slot. The goal at the 16.26 mark was the 10th of the year for Colangelo.
The game remained in the Huskies favor until Kathleen McHugh of the Friars was able to slot a shot past Annie Belanger at the 13.51 mark in the third period. Belanger was solid in net for the Huskies with 36 saves in net for UConn.
Colangelo sealed the Huskies victory with a great individual effort that was completed with a back-handed goal to send the Huskies home with their fourth-straight triumph. Colangelo notched her second overtime winner in eight days. Colangelo scored an overtime winner on Jan. 26 against Maine.
The Huskies return to action next weekend on the road at Vermont on Friday Feb. 9-10. Just four games remain in the regular season as the Huskies look to position themselves for the upcoming Hockey East Tournament.
