Maine Wins Twice; Northeastern Takes Two at Union

HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

UMass Lowell downed defending national champion and top-ranked Minnesota Duluth, 3-2, on Friday night on the road. Sophomore Lucas Condotta (Georgetown, Ont.) potted two goals in the victory, while senior Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) stopped 68 of 72 shots (.944 SV%) in the weekend split. Across the two outings, Wall denied 28 third-period shots.

Boston College began the season 2-0-0 for the first time since the 2011-12 season, a season that ended with the Eagles claiming their fifth NCAA title. David Cotton (Parker, Texas/2g, 4a) and Julius Mattila (Tampere, Finland/2g, 4a) each recorded two goals and four assists in the victories while rookie netminder Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) earned his first career shutout on Sunday, stopping all 39 shots he faced at Colgate. He kicked out 23 shots Friday night against #16 Wisconsin and closed the weekend with a .954 save percentage.

Maine's offense came alive Friday night, topping Alaska Anchorage, 7-1, before claiming a 2-1 overtime victory on Saturday. Tim Doherty (Portsmouth, R.I.) racked up five points (2g, 3a) and Jeremy Swayman, ME (Anchorage, Alaska) allowed just two goals across two wins, tallying 57 saves.

Northeastern earned two come-from-behind victories at Union over the weekend, picking up back-to-back 2-1 wins over the Dutchmen. Zach Solow (Naples, Fla.) surpassed 50 career points over the weekend, picking up an assist in each of the Huskies' triumphs, including a helper on Saturday's game-winning goal.

New Hampshire earned a 1-0-1 record on the road at Miami, powered by five points from junior forward Charlie Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.) Posted one goal and four assists for five points in 1-0-1 weekend series at Miami. He recorded one goal and two assists for his third career three-point game in Friday's 6-2 win before dishing out another two helpers in Saturday's 4-4 stalemate.

Massachusetts raised the 2018-19 Hockey East regular season championship banner Friday night before going on to take a 5-3 decision over RPI. Rookie defenseman Zac Jones (Glen Allen, Va.) picked up two points in his collegiate debut, firing home a power-play goal and chipping in an assist. His assist and goal came just 1:09 apart.

David Cotton - Boston College

David Cotton (Parker, Texas) the BC captain began his senior career with a goal and two assists in each of his first two games, collecting six total points for the Eagles in a pair of wins over #16 Wisconsin and Colgate. Cotton factored in all three goals in Sunday's 3-0 blanking of Colgate, including dishing out his 50th career assist.

Spencer Knight - Boston College

Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) earned his first two NCAA wins last weekend and his first career shutout on Sunday, stopping all 39 shots he faced at Colgate. He kicked out 23 shots Friday night against Wisconsin and closed the weekend with a .954 save percentage.

Tyler Wall - UMass Lowell

Tyler Wall (Sr., G; Leamington, Ont.) stopped 68 of 72 shots (.944 SV%) in the weekend split at #1 Minnesota Duluth. He kicked out 32 saves in Friday night's 3-2 win against the Bulldogs and made a season-high 36 stops in a 2-1 setback on Saturday. Across the two outings, Wall denied 28 third-period shots.


Max Gildon - New Hampshire

Max Gildon (Jr., D; Plano, Texas) had one goal and four helpers for a five-point weekend during the Wildcats' 1-0-1 series at Miami. The junior defenseman registered two assists in the season-opening 6-2 win and had one goal and one helper in Saturday's 4-4 draw.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Julius Mattila, BC (Sr., F; Tampere, Finland) Picked up three points in each of his season-opening games (2g, 4a) and finished with a plusfive rating and a team-high 12 shots on net. He potted two goals in the first period of Friday's tilt with #16 Wisconsin, his 100th career game with the maroon and gold, and collected assists in all three goals on Sunday at Colgate. He went 29-17 at the faceoff dot for a 63% win rate.

Tim Doherty, ME (Sr., F; Portsmouth, R.I.) Racked up five points (2g, 3a) as Maine went 2-0-0 against Alaska Anchorage last weekend, powering the Black Bears' offense to 7-1 and 2-1 victories.

Jeremy Swayman, ME (Jr., G; Anchorage, Alaska) Allowed just two goals across two wins, tallying 57 saves as he backboned Maine to its first two victories of the 2019-20 season. He made 37 stops in a 2-1 overtime win on Saturday, including nine across the final two periods.

Mitchell Chaffee, UMass (Jr., F: Rockford, Mich.) Began his junior season with a three-point (2g, 1a) night in a 5-3 win over RPI as UMass raised its 2018-19 Hockey East regular season champions banner on Friday.

Riley Hughes, NU (Fr., F; Westwood, Mass.) In just his second collegiate appearance, he picked up his first NCAA point on a game-tying goal at Union on Saturday night. His strike at 8:54 of the third period knotted the game at one goal apiece before the Huskies claimed a 2-1 win three minutes later.

Jordan Harris, NU (So., D; Haverhill, Mass.) Played a critical role in both of the Huskies' 2-1 come-from-behind wins at Union. The sophomore defenseman netted the game-tying goal in Friday's victory before setting up a mid-third period game-winning strike on Saturday. He played a role on the Northeastern defense that allowed just two goals and 40 shots on net across two games and he recorded two blocked shots.
