Five Defensemen and Two Forwards Highlight The Selections

WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Seven skaters with Hockey East ties were selected in the 2021 National Women’s Hockey League Entry Draft, as announced last night. A full list of those players can be found below.

Boston College forward Maegan Beres (Whistler, B.C.) was selected by the Toronto Six with third overall pick in the NWHL Entry Draft, the first of three consecutive picks for the Six in the first round. In total, 45 Hockey East alumnae have been chosen in the NWHL Entry Draft, including a record 11 in 2017 and nine in 2020. A total of 30 recent college graduates were selected in 2021 by the league’s six member clubs over a five-round process. Each pick was introduced live on Twitch for the first time in league history.

In 2020, Boston University’s Sammy Davis was picked with the first overall selection, making Boston University is now the only school to have the first overall pick in the entry drafts of the NWHL, CWHL, (2016 - Kayla Tutino, Boston Blades), and the NHL (2000 - Rick DiPietro, New York Islanders.) Davis was the third player from Hockey East to be selected first overall in the NWHL Draft, following a pair of Boston College Eagles in Alex Carpenter in 2015 and Katie Burt in 2017.

The six NWHL teams competing in the league’s seventh season include the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps, and the newest expansion team, the Toronto Six, which began play last year.

The Boston Pride won the 2021 Isobel Cup, supported by 15 players with Hockey East ties.
