Holy Cross Takes Shootout After 1-1 Tie Against Providence

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team hosted Providence for the final game of the season series. The Crusaders battled to a 1-1 tie with the Friars but Holy Cross would beat Providence, 2-0 in the shootout for the extra point in Hockey East standings.

Midway through the first period, junior forward Madison Michals claimed the lead for the Crusaders at 10:57. She was assisted by forwards sophomore Alexia Moreau and senior Bryn Saarela. It wasn't until the third period when the Friars answered to equalize the score and send the game into overtime. The game resulted in a 1-1 tie to award each time with a point a piece in league standings. Senior forward Millie Sirum and Saarela netted their goals in the shootout to give the Crusaders an extra point.

"It was a great team effort," said Michals. "The first two periods we came out with a lot of energy and we did what we needed to do in the third, and then in overtime. Glad to have come out with the big shootout win."

Senior goalie Madison Beck had a tremendous performance between the pipes earning her fourth career tie. She made a total of 33 saves in the outing and now owns a 2.52 goals against average with a .914 save percentage.


HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Holy Cross got on the board first with a goal midway through the first period by Michals at 10:57.

- Neither team scored in the second period.

- Providence equalized with a goal at 10:32 in the third period to force the game into overtime

- A scoreless overtime resulted in a 1-1 tie

- Goals from Sirum and Saarela and two great saves from Beck in the shootout earned Holy Cross the 2-0 shootout victory and extra point in Hockey East standings.
