New Hampshire Rallies But Falls To Quinnipiac In Overtime, 3-2

DURHAM, N.H. - Marina Alvarez (Center Moriches, N.Y.) and Shea Verrier (Reading, Mass.) scored third-period goals to lift the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team into a 2-2 tie, but No. 8 Quinnipiac University scored at 2:19 of overtime to record a 3-2 win Friday night at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.

Alvarez pulled UNH within 2-1 at 12:41 and Verrier scored an extra-attacker goal with 9.6 seconds remaining to level the score. Blair Sedona (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was credited with a season-high 33 saves.

Nina Steigauf scored at 2:19 of OT to lift the Bobcats to victory. Madison Chantler and Sadie Peart both scored in the second period. Logan Angers stopped 30 shots.

UNH is 2-1-0 and Quinnipiac is 3-0-0.

- Quinnipiac recorded a 9-8 shot advantage in the scoreless opening 20 minutes.


SECOND PERIOD

- Chantler's first goal of the season gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead at 3:53.

- Kate Reilly snapped a diagonal pass from the top of the right circle to Peart cutting down the slot and she lifted a shot into the net for a 2-0 lead at 9:12.


THIRD PERIOD

- Alvarez scored her first goal of the season to lift UNH within 2-1 at 12:41. Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec) initiated the sequence from the right corner to the half-boards, where Chavonne Truter (Uxbridge, Ontario) shoveled a pass to the high slot for Alvarez's one-timer.

- UNH pulled Blair in favor of an extra attacker with 2:06 remaining.

- The Bobcats were whistled for icing at 19:37 and 19:45. Sydney Leonard (St. Bonifacius, Minn.) won the second faceoff into the left corner, where Kira Juodikis (LaSalle, Ontario) sent a backhanded pass to the low slot. Verrier, who was advancing toward the right post, double back onto the loose puck and slipped a low shot between Angers legs to tie the score, 2-2, at 19:50.4


OVERTIME

- Maya Labad corralled a loose puck in the neutral zone and led a 2-on-1 break along the right boards. She saucered a centering pass and Steigauf's one-timer from the slot floated into the upper-left corner to end the game.


GAME NOTEBOOK

- Quinnipiac finished with a 36-32 shot advantage and 47-27 edge in the faceoff circle.

- UNH went 0-for-3 on the power play and the Bobcats were 0-for-2.

- The Wildcats blocked 16 shot attempts and QU was credited with five blocks.

- Juodikis, the reigning Hockey East Player of the Week, has recorded a point all three games this season.

- Leonard has tallied an assist every game. She led the 'Cats with 15 faceoff wins.
