News and notes from the upcoming weekend of Hockey East action

#7 Providence at Boston College, vs. UMass Lowell

- #10 Boston College and #7 Providence hit the ice Friday night for their first meeting since last year's quarterfinal round of the Hockey East Tournament. Each game of that series was decided by one goal, with the Friars winning game one 5-4 in overtime, the Eagles taking game two in the extra frame, 4-3, to force the decisive game three, which they went on to win, 2-1.

- The Eagles return to home ice after traveling west to visit #1 Denver for two games. They were shutout by the Pioneers, 3-0, on Friday after allowing two empty net goals, before staging a comeback on Saturday that ultimately fell short, 6-4.

- Rookies Mike Hardman (Hanover, Mass.) and Drew Helleson (Farmington, Minn.) each netted their first collegiate goals on Saturday.

- The Friars enter the weekend after sweeping two games on the road while visiting St. Lawrence and Clarkson. They shutout the Saints, 6-0, and defeated the Golden Knights, 4-2, with Tyce Thompson (Milford, Conn.) leading the offensive charge. The sophomore forward recorded three goals and two assists on the weekend.

- UMass Lowell kicks off a slate of eight-straight Hockey East match ups this weekend when they face off against Boston University and Providence. The River Hawks and Terriers split their two-game regular season series, while the Friars came away with a series sweep through their two meetings.

- The River Hawks enter their first weekend of league play on a three-game winless streak. Most recently, they went 0-1-1 in a two-game set against Colgate on home ice that saw each game go to overtime. They fell to the Raiders, 4-3, on Friday, before playing to a 0-0 stalemate on Saturday,


#3 UMass vs. AIC

- The Minutemen play host to AIC on Friday night in their only game of the weekend. In their only meeting during the 2018-19 season, UMass skated away with a 6-1 victory on the road against their Western Mass rivals.

- Greg Carvel's team heads into the weekend with a 4-1-0 record after falling to Northeastern, 3-1, in league play on Tuesday night and taking both games during a home stand over Union.

- UMass allowed just one goal against the Dutchmen, earning a 6-1 victory in game one, before recording a 5-0 shutout in game two. Freshman defenseman Zac Jones (Glen Allen, Va.) earned Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week honors after tallying five points (1g, 4a) against Union.


Vermont vs. Maine, at #9 Quinnipiac

- Vermont welcomes Maine to Gutterson Fieldhouse for their first Hockey East match up of the 2019-20 season on Friday night before traveling to take on non-conference opponent Quinnipiac on Sunday. The Catamounts and Black Bears faced off twice last year, with the later taking the two-game series, 1-0-1, with a 2-1 overtime victory and 3-3 draw.

- The Catamounts earned a weekend split as Kevin Sneddon's program opened the season with a road trip to visit Clarkson and St Lawrence in upstate New York. They fell to the Golden Knights, 3-2, before keeping the Saints off the board to earn a 2-0 shutout and their first win of the season.

- Vermont Senior netminder Stefanos Lekkas (Elburn, Ill.) was tabbed as Hockey Defensive Player of the Week after recording 64 saves on the weekend, including 35 on Saturday to earn his first blank sheet of the year.

- Maine is back on the road for its third-straight game after a road trip that saw Red Gendron's team take a weekend split at then-#6 Quinnipiac. The Black Bears took the first meeting, 4-2, before the Bobcats responded with a 4-3 win on night two. Eduards Tralmaks (Riga Latvia) earned Hockey East Player of the Week honors after a five-point weekend (3g, 2a.) The junior has tallied at least one point in Maine's last four games.


Merrimack vs. New Hampshire

- The Warriors welcome the Wildcats to Lawler Arena for one game Friday night to open up the programs' three-game regular season series. The two teams faced off twice last year, with New Hampshire earning the series sweep after defeating Merrimack, 2-1, in overtime and shutting them out, 5-0.

- Merrimack heads into the weekend after going 1-1-0 in non-conference play. They earned their first win of the season with a 3-1 triumph at Holy Cross Thursday night, before going scoreless in a 4-0 setback to RIT.

- Logan Drevitch (Middleborough, Mass.) and Sami Tavernier (Morzine, France) each had a goal and an assist against the Crusaders.


#11 Northeastern at #16 St. Cloud

- Northeastern heads out on their second weekend road trip of the year as they head to St. Cloud for two games of non-conference action between a pair of undefeated teams. The two Huskies last faced off at Matthews Arena on October 27, 2018, with the Hockey East version earning a come-from -behind victory with three unanswered goals in a 3-2 triumph over the then-#2 St. Cloud squad.

- Northeastern sits unbeaten with a 3-0-1 record after facing off against UMass in league play and Holy Cross in non-conference action last week. They defeated the Minutemen, 3-1, on Tuesday, before playing to a 2-2 overtime draw with the Crusaders.

- Sophomore Tyler Madden (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) notched each goal in Saturday's 2-2 stalemate.


Boston University at UMass Lowell, vs. New Hampshire

- Boston University begins Hockey East play this weekend the Terriers visit UMass Lowell on Friday night and play host to New Hampshire on Saturday. • Last season, the Terriers and River Hawks faced off a total of five times. The two teams split during the regular season before clashing in the quarterfinal round of the Hockey East Tournament, a duel that saw Albie O'Connell's team advance to the semifinals in the best-of-three series on the road.

- The Terriers look to turn things around after going 0-1-1 against non-conference foe Northern Michigan over the weekend. They played the Wildcats to a 4-4 overtime draw on Friday, before being edged out, 4-3, on Saturday.

- Rookie Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.) had three points (1g, 2a) on the weekend, including the first goal of his collegiate career on Saturday.
