DEVELOPING THE PLAYOFF PICTURE

- The combination of Saturday's win, the University of Vermont's tie and Providence College's loss locked UNH into fifth place and the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Hockey East tournament. The Wildcats will play at fourth-seeded UConn in next weekend's best-of-three quarterfinal series.

GAME RECAP

Carlee Toews (Grand Prairie, Alberta) proved that crashing the net and being at the right place at the right time produces positive results. With UNH on the power play late in the game, Sara Carlson (Hutchinson, Minn.) skated the puck from the neutral zone to the right circle before blasting a shot on goal. The puck ricocheted off Chuli's torso into the crease and caromed off Toews' upper body into the goal to give UNH a 2-1 lead at 17:18 of the third period.

New Hampshire had rallied to tie the score, 1-1, at 14:39 of the second period. Haley Breedlove (Plano, Texas) crossed the center line and dumped the puck into the offensive zone along the left boards. Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alberta) corralled the puck behind the net and threw a pass down low, where Jonna Curtis (Elk River, Minn.) deposited a low shot into the net for her team-leading 16th goal of the season.

UConn was outshot 13-5 in the first period but took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission when Kayla Mee's shot from the high slot sailed through traffic inside the right post. Leah Buress, with the pass off the right half-boards, and Brittany Berisoff were credited with assists.

UNH goalie Kyra Smith (Littleton, Colo.) made 18 saves, including seven in both the second and third periods. Chuli finished with 29 saves for UConn.

WILDCAT NOTEBOOK

- Smith is 2-0-0 in two games vs. UConn this season with a 1.00 GAA and .951 save percentage. She earned her first career victory with a 21-save effort in the 2-1 win at UConn on Nov. 8.

- Both Curtis and Vilgrain extended their point streak to three games. Curtis has two goals and two assists for four points while Vilgrain has three goals and an assist for four points.

- UNH has scored a power-play goal each of the last four games and is 4-for-16 (25.0%) in that span. The 'Cats have socred a PPG six of the last seven games and has a 25.9% success rate (7 of 27).

- UNH's penalty kill has been strong the past seven games with just one power-play goal allowed in 20 shorthanded situations; that's a 95.0% success rate.

- Maybe it's just an amazing coincidence, but Toews was featured on Saturday's program cover and scored the game-winning goal.
