PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team registered a 4-1 loss against the No. 2/3 Boston College Eagles on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Schneider Arena. With the Hockey East loss, the Friars fall to 0-9-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play on the season while the Eagles improve to 7-0-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Hockey East.
Following the first period, the Friars trailed the Eagles, 2-0. Boston College forward Meghan Grieves notched both goals in the period, with the first coming on an unassisted breakaway at 2:06. Grieves doubled the lead for the Eagles at 9:34 of the opening frame when she netted a cross-ice pass from Danielle Doherty. The eventual game winning goal beat Friars junior netminder Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
Despite each team having two power plays in the second period, the score remained the same after 40 minutes of play.
Just 1:07 into the third period, the Eagles added another goal to gain a 3-0 lead over Providence. Eagles freshman Tori Sullivan capitalized off a pass from Kenzie Kent to beat Morse.
Providence senior Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) broke the shutout when she tallied her first goal of the season at 15:15 of the third period. Micheletti's goal was set up by junior Brittney Thunstrom (Coon Rapids, Minn.) who registered her first assist of the season on the play. The goal, which was scored while shorthanded, brought the Friars within two goals but the Eagles would quickly respond to regain the 3-goal advantage.
The Eagles completed the game's scoring at 15:51 of the final period when Andie Anastos tapped in a goal off a pass from Kent while on the power play. Emily Field also assisted on the goal that made the score 4-1.
Morse played a strong game in net for the Friars despite the loss, as she 30 stopped shots. Morse set a career-high in saves as her previous high was 29 saves in a 3-3 tie against Syracuse on Oct. 18, 2014. Boston College goalie Katie Burt finished the game with 19 saves in the win. The Eagles outshot the Friars 34-19 in the meeting.
The Friars penalty kill played well as the team killed off 5-of-6 power plays and also added a shorthanded goal.
The Friars travel to Union for their next game on Friday, Nov. 7 at 3:00p.m. Providence returns to Schneider Arena on Sunday, Nov. 9 for a Hockey East match-up against Connecticut at 2:00p.m.
