Kathleen Smith scored twice for Providence

Providence, R.I. - The women's ice hockey team defeated Boston University, 3-1, in a Hockey East matchup Sunday afternoon. Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) led the way for the Friars, recording two goals and an assist. Providence improves to 10-9-3 (5-2-2 HE) while Boston University drops to 7-11-2 (4-5-0 HE).

The Friars struck for the game's first goal as Sarah Feldman (Fall River, Mass.) won an offensive zone face-off back to linemate Katy Beach (Cleveland, Ohio) who was at the top of the circle. Beach then slid a pass to Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario), who fired a slapshot into the top right corner of the net to give the Friars a 1-0 lead at 8:15. BU was able to then tie the game at 17:15 when Jillian Kirchner took advantage of a Friar turnover and scored on a wraparound attempt. Caroline Bourdeau was credited with an assist on the play.

The Friars were able to regain the lead in the second period as they converted on a power-play chance at 15:53. Brittany Simpson (Barrie, Ontario) passed the puck over to Smith at the point, who put a shot on net that BU goaltender Allyse Wilcox turned aside, but Danielle Tangredi (London, Ontario) put home the rebound for her second goal in as many days.

In the third period, PC's Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ontario) came close to giving the Friars a two goal lead at 14:00 when she rang a shot from the point off of the cross bar. Then Smith was able to give the Friars a 3-1 lead at 8:02, when she took a pass from Beach and beat Wilcox with a low shot from the point. Feldman assisted on the power-play goal as well. BU had a chance to get back in the game as they had an extended five-on-three advantage, but the PC penalty kill held off the Terrier attack.

In net, junior Danielle Ciarletta finished with 26 saves to earn the win, while BU's Wilcox made 33 saves in defeat.

The Friars return to action next weekend with a two-game series at the University of Vermont. The first game will be played on Friday, January 25 at 7:00 at the Catamounts' Gutterson Fieldhouse.
