BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont used a four-goal second period to pull away from Ottawa en route to a 7-0 shutout victory on Saturday night in exhibition action at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Yvan Pattyn and H.T. Lenz each scored twice and five different players tallied multi-point games on the night for the Catamounts.

"I was pleased with the way the freshmen played. We played nine of them and they played a lot," said head coach Kevin Sneddon. "I saw a lot of good things, particularly with the limited practice time we've had. We were kind of ragged at times but I thought we were better as the game went along."

Vermont opened the scoring just 1:31 into the contest. Nick Bruneteau picked up a loose puck at center ice and carried it into the right faceoff circle. The senior wristed a quick shot that beat Harrison May short side for an unassisted goal. UVM took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission after a 18-7 edge in shots in the first period.

Roughly halfway through the game, the Catamounts began to break it open. Connor Brickley curled around the offensive zone and found Pattyn in the low right circle, and the sophomore roofed the puck for a 2-0 advantage. Four and a half minutes later, Brickley finished off a 2-on-0 with Colin Markison to extend the lead to three.

Lenz then added both of his tallies in a three-minute span near the end of the middle frame. Markison's initial shot was saved by May but the rebound sat on the edge of the goalmouth as Lenz tucked it inside the right post at 15:41. Brickley followed by breaking up an icing whistle and fed Lenz for a one-timer at the top of the crease, giving the Cats a five-goal cushion after 40 minutes.

UVM tacked on two more insurance tallies in the third period as Mike Stenerson scored on the power play and Pattyn rifled home his second of the night. Rookies Mike Santaguida (10 saves) and Pat Feeley (six saves) combined on the shutout as the Catamounts out-shot the Gee-Gees 47-16.

Vermont returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 6) with a 3 p.m. exhibition contest against Acadia University at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Pre-game coverage begins at 2:30 on WVMT 620-AM and SportsJuice.com, and the game will be streamed live for free in high definition on CatamounTV.com.
