CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore Johnny Gaudreau recorded one goal and one assist and senior Parker Milner registered 26 saves for his fifth career shutout to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 Hockey East victory over Northeastern in front of a sold-out crowd of 7,884 fans in the team's home opener at Kelley Rink.

Prior to faceoff, Boston College paid its final tribute to last year's national championship team by raising the championship banner to the Kelley Rink rafters. Several members of each of the five title-winning teams - including former coach and member of the 1949 team Len Ceglarski - were on hand for the occasion.

Junior Kevin Hayes started the Eagles off with a power-play goal at 6:16 of the first period with freshman Teddy Doherty and senior Patrick Wey recording the assists on the play. The assist marked Doherty's first collegiate point.

Gaudreau netted an even-strength goal, his second goal of the season, to put the Eagles up 2-0 at 10:06 of the first period. Senior Pat Mullane hit Gaudreau with a pass just as he split two Northeastern defenders to create a breakaway and Gaudreau juked to his right and snuck it into the goal.

Senior forward Steven Whitney scored the only goal of the second period and put the Eagles ahead 3-0 at 18:32. Gaudreau had the puck on the far post and found Whitney in the slot as he slammed home a one-timer over the goaltender's left shoulder.

Boston College converted two of its six power-play chances while Northeastern went 0-for-8 with a man advantage.

Milner turned away 26 shots an improved to 2-1-0. Northeastern goalie Chris Rawlings stopped 24 shots in the defeat. He falls to 2-1-0.

The host Eagles out shot Northeastern, 27-26.

Boston College is next in action at UMass-Lowell on Friday, Oct. 26. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. The Eagles and River Hawks will conclude the two-game, home-and-home weekend series at BC's Kelley Rink on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m.
