PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FALLS TO BROWN IN MAYOR'S CUP, 5-2

Senior forward Matt Bergland scored a goal for the Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Brown University scored five unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon in the 26th Annual Mayor's Cup played at PC's Schneider Arena.

Providence (8-8-1) struck first at 4:49 of the first period when freshman Ross Mauermann (Janesville, Wis.) scored a short-handed goal as he fired a back hander past Brown goalie Mike Clemente. It marked Mauermann's sixth goal of the season and the second short-handed tally. The Friars extended their lead to 2-0 at 7:39 of the third period as senior Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) collected a loose puck at center ice, skated in on a breakaway and lifted a wrist shot underneath the cross bar.

Brown (6-6-1) scored three goals in the latter half of the second period to take a 3-2 lead. Chris Zaires scored off a re-direction in front to trim the Friar lead to 2-1 at 12:47. Matt Lorito evened the game at 2-2 as he also re-directed a shot into the net at 17:15. Just 1:31 later, Jack Maclellan scored a short-handed goal to give the Bears the lead for good. Maclellan put the puck on goal and it took a deflection off a Friar defenseman and into the net.

The Friars outshot the Bears, 12-9, in the third period, but Brown's Ryan Jacobson scored two third period goals, including an empty-net goal at 18:47 to seal the win.

Both teams finished with 30 shots each. Providence senior goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) finished with 25 saves, while Clemente stopped 28 shots.

The Friars are back in action at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 5 when they host the University of Massachusetts at Schneider Arena.
