PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- UMass' P.J. Fenton scored with 2:54 left in the third period as the Minutemen defeated the Providence College men's hockey team, 3-2, Saturday night in a Hockey East battle at Schneider Arena. UMass completed a two-game sweep of the Friars as they improved to 4-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in league play. PC fell to 2-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference action.
UMass jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead as Cory Quirk and Matt Anderson scored late in the period. Quirk won the face off at the PC end and eluded his defender before firing a wrist shot past PC netminder Tyler Sims (Grand Blanc, Mich.) at 14:19. Just under five minutes later, Anderson scored a power-play goal after being set up right in front by Kevin Jarman and Fenton at 19:37.
The Friars rallied to tie the game in the second period on goals by sophomore Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) and senior Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) Sophomore Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) worked the puck along the left wing boards before sliding a pass to Mazzolini, who ripped a one timer from the top of the left face off circle past UMass' Jon Quick to cut the lead to 2-1 at 8:28. Watson scored the equalizer on the power play as he redirected a pass from senior Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.). For Watson, it marked his first goal of the season.
Much like last night's 4-1 loss against the Minutemen, PC outshot UMass, 37-22. However, UMass scored the game winner at 17:06 when Fenton converted from in close off a pass from Will Ortiz. The Friars pulled netminder Ryan Simpson (Bow, N.H.) with 1:30 remaining for an extra skater, but PC could not score the equalizer. Simpson and Sims combined to make 19 saves, while Quick stopped 35 shots.
