MAINE BLACK BEARS TOP BEMIDJI STATE, 6-3
Clark and Purcell Each Score Two Goals

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team wrapped up a weekend sweep of Bemidji State with a 6-3 win on Saturday night. In front of a sold-out crowd of 5,450 at Alfond Arena, Wes Clark and Teddy Purcell scored two goals each for the Black Bears. Bret Tyler had three assists, while Ben Bishop had 20 saves in the win. Maine improves to 3-0-0 on the season.

The Black Bears got the scoring started at 4:33 in the first period when Chris Hahn (Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan) cycled the puck around to Billy Ryan (Milton, Mass.), who passed to Wes Clark (Oakville, Ontario) for the goal from the slot. The Beavers responded with a power play goal at 9:49 when Ryan Miller scored with assists from Rob Siriannio and Tyler Scofield. Maine had a total of five power play opportunities in the period, however they failed to convert on the advantages. The Black Bears had a 16 to eight edge on shots in the first period.

The Beavers took the lead just 14 seconds into the second period when Luke Erickson scored a power play goal with assists from Matt Pope and Shane Holman. It did not take long for the Black Bears to tie the game as at 2:26 Matt Duffy (Windham, Maine) scored on a five-on-three power play. He was assisted on the goal by Bret Tyler and Keenan Hopson (Prince George, British Columbia). At 4:49, Maine regained the lead when Wes Clark scored his second goal of the night with assists from Chris Hahn and Keith Johnson (Windsor, Conn.). The Black Bears added a third goal in the period when Teddy Purcell (St. John's, Newfoundland) scored on the power play at 11:06. He was assisted by Billy Ryan and Bret Tyler on the five-on-three advantage. Luke Erickson from Bemidji State scored his second goal of the game at 13:50 on the power play with assists from Matt Allen and Brandon Marino. Maine held a 4-3 lead after two periods and a 28 to 16 lead on shots, but Bemidji State was three of five on power plays through two periods.

In the third period, Zach Sill (Colchester County, Nova Scotia) scored his first collegiate goal at 7:58. He was assists by Rob Bellamy (Westfield, Mass.) and Mike Hamilton (Victoria, British Columbia) on the goal. Teddy Purcell wrapped up the scoring with a power play goal at 16:45 with assists from Bret Tyler and Michel Léveillé (Levis, Quebec).

In goal, Maine's Ben Bishop allowed three goals and had 20 saves. For Bemidji State, Matt Climie had six goals against and 31 saves. Maine had eight penalties for 16 minutes and Bemidji State had 12 penalties for 24 minutes. On power plays, Maine was 3-11 and Bemidji State was 3-7. For the game, Maine outshot the Beavers 37 to 23.
