WAKEFIELD, Mass. - The Hockey East Association set a record with 27 current players and recruits taken in the 2019 National Hockey League Entry Draft, representing seven of the 11 Hockey East member schools. Hockey East's 27 selections were the most of any college hockey conference in a draft that saw 71 NCAA players and recruits chosen, the most since 2007. A full list of Hockey East players taken can be found below.
Of the 27 players, three spent the 2018-19 season in Hockey East and all three appeared in the 2019 Frozen Four, including Providence's Tyce Thompson (Milford, Conn./New Jersey) and a pair of Massachusetts players in Marc Del Gaizo (Basking Ridge, N.J./Nashville) and Filip Lindberg (Espoo, Finland/Minnesota). Only four players who skated in the NCAA last season were selected.
In total, Hockey East had 12 forwards, 12 defensemen, and three goaltenders chosen. Boston University led all NCAA schools with eight selections in the draft, while Boston College boasted five, including a record three in the first round. Providence had four players taken, while UConn and Massachusetts each boasted three and UMass Lowell Northeastern had two each.
The record showing at the 2019 NHL Draft concludes a banner 2018-19 season for Hockey East that saw 96 alumni play in the NHL, more than any other college hockey conference. That number is 16 more than the second place league and nearly double the next-closest conference.
