Hockey East Frozen Four Weekend Preview
Massachusetts and Providence have advanced to the national semifinals

Massachusetts vs. Denver

- Massachusetts earned the first bid to the 2019 Frozen Four and its first in program history, after posting back-to-back 4-0 shutouts against Harvard and Notre Dame in the Northeast Regional in Manchester, New Hampshire.

- Cale Makar (Calgary, Alta.) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Northeast Regional while rookie netminder Filip Lindberg (Espoo, Finland) stopped all 30 shots he faced on the weekend. Makar is also a Top 3 Finalist for the 2019 Hobey Baker Memorial Award.

- Greg Carvel was named the 2019 Spencer Penrose Award Winner as National Coach of the Year this week for his work in bringing the Minutemen to their first Frozen Four and winning a program-record 30 games so far.

- UMass's performance in the regional marked just the fourth time in history that a team posted consecutive shutouts in the regional stage since the field expanded to 16 teams. Boston College and Wisconsin did so in 2006 and the Eagles repeated the feat in 2012. Denver also posted back-to-back shutouts in their regional efforts this year.

Providence vs. Minnesota Duluth

- Providence is appearing in the Frozen Four for the first time since 2015, the year the Friars claimed the NCAA title at the TD Garden in Boston.

- Junior Josh Wilkins (Raleigh, N.C.) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA East Regional for his five-point (3g, 2a) performance across two games and Hayden Hawkey (Parker, Colo.) pitched 108:52 of shutout hockey to backbone the Friars into the national championship weekend.

- Wilkins has reached a career-high with 19 goals, tied with Denver's Jared Lukosevicius for most by any player in the Frozen Four. Wilkins has 10 goals and 16 points over his last nine games.

- Providence Head Coach Nate Leaman is 14-4-7 against NCHC schools since his arrival in 2011-12.

- If Providence and UMass meet in the championship game, it will be the fourth meeting between the Friars and Minutemen this season. All three previous tilts ended in 3-2, with the Minutemen claiming two of the three contests in league play. All-time, Providence is 48-27-6 (.630) against UMass.

- Providence played Denver twice this season, going 0-1-1 against the Pioneers in November in Denver.

2019 National Championship Game

- Since regional tournament play began in 1992, 33 of the 54 teams that have advanced to the Frozen Four from the eastern regional tournaments have been from Hockey East. Seventeen Hockey East teams have been sent to the western regionals in the same span, but only two of those have advanced to the Frozen Four.

- At least two Hockey East teams have qualified for the Frozen Four in 14 of the conference's 35 seasons, dominating the competition in that span. The WCHA and CCHA are the next closest, with each having six instances of two Frozen Four teams.

- On three occasions (1995,1999, 2015) the NCAA championship game featured two Hockey East squads. The only two other occurrences of this since the inception of Hockey East in 1984-85 were once each by the WCHA (2005) and ECAC (2013).
