News and notes from the upcoming weekend of Hockey East action

#10 UMass Lowell vs. #13 Providence (home and home)

- UMass Lowell and Providence hit the ice together for the first time since February 2018 in a home and home series over the weekend. Last season, the Friars posted a 2-0-0 record to sweep the regular season series over the River Hawks.

- The River Hawks will look to keep their momentum, heading into the weekend riding a 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1). Most recently, they closed out two regular season series with shutouts over Boston College and #2 UMass. They defeated the Eagles, 3-0, to finish their three-game series with a 2-0-1 record, before going on to shutout the Minutemen, 2-0, to sweep their regular season series, 2-0-0.

- Tyler Wall (Leamnigton, Ont.) and Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) were named Hockey East Co-Players of the Week for their efforts in the victories. Wall posted 28 saves against Boston College to earn his fourth shutout of the year and the seventh of his career, while Hernberg recorded 31 stops for his third blank sheet this season and the eighth of his career against UMass.

- Providence is back in action after a weekend split on the road at Maine. The Friars shutout the Black Bears, 1-0, in their first meeting of the weekend, before dropping a 3-1 decision on night two.

- Bryan Lemos (East Providence, R.I.) scored his first game-winning goal of the season in Friday night’s victory.


#2 UMass vs. Boston College (home and home)

- UMass and Boston College will hit the ice together for the first time since February 15, 2018 on Friday evening at the Mullins Center, before heading to Chestnut Hill for the second game of the home and home series on Saturday. The Eagles took last year’s series between the two teams, posting a 2-0-0 record over the Minutemen.

- The Minutemen enter the weekend after closing out two regular season Hockey East series over the weekend. They defeated Boston University, 4-2, on Friday night to take that series 2-0-0, before being shutout by UMass Lowell 2-0 on Saturday and dropping that series with a 0-2-0 record against the River Hawks. UMass became the first school to clinch a spot in the Hockey East Tournament and is guaranteed to finish among the top eight schools in the Army ROTC Hockey East Standings.

- Boston College looks to get back on track after going 1-2-0 in its last three. The Eagles defeated Harvard, 2-1, in the opening round of the Beanpot tournament to advance on to the championship game, but were defeated, 4-2, by defending champions Northeastern. On Friday, they were shutout by UMass Lowell, 3-0, in their only Hockey East match up of the weekend.


#14 Northeastern vs. Vermont

- Northeastern and Vermont will close out their three-game series when the Catamounts visit the Huskies for two games. The home team owns the advantage after defeating Vermont, 1-0, during a one-game road trip in November.

- The Huskies come into the weekend fresh off of their second straight Beanpot title after defeating Boston College, 4-2, at TD Garden on Monday night. In the opening round of the tournament, they defeated Boston University, 2-1, in overtime to advance on to the championship game. Cayden Primeau (Voorhees, N.J.) was named the 2019 Beanpot Most Valuable Player and earned the Eberly Award for the second straight year, turning away 59 of 62 shots faced in the tournament.

- In its only conference game of the weekend, Northeastern came up short in a 3-2 overtime loss on the road at UConn.

- Vermont goes back on the road after playing to a weekend split with New Hampshire in a two-game home stand. They were shutout by the Wildcats, 1-0, on Friday night, before skating to a 4-1 victory on Saturday.

- Stefanos Lekkas (Elburn, Ill.) was named Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts on the weekend. The junior stopped 57 of 59 shots through the two games, which was good for a 1.01 goals against average and a .966 save percentage to help the Catamounts to a 0-1-1 record.


UConn vs. Boston University (home and home)

- UConn and Boston University will look to close out their three-game regular season Hockey East series with a home and home series over the weekend. The two teams met for the first time in November in Belfast, Northern Ireland, with the Terriers skating away with a 3-2 victory in the Friendship Four tournament.

- The Huskies enter the series after earning four points in league play over the weekend. They defeated then-#13 Northeastern, 3-2, in overtime, before going on to shutout Merrimack, 5-0.

- Ruslan Iskhakov (Moscow, Russia) was named Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week after posting four points (1g, 3a) in the Huskies’ weekend sweep. The freshman set up the game-tying tally to force the extra frame against Northeastern on Thursday, before going on to net his first career game-winning goal on Saturday. On the back end, Tomáš Vomáčka (Truntov, Czech Republic) recorded 60 stops en route to earning his first Hockey East victory and the first shutout of his career. The rookie earned Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts.

- Boston University looks to put a stop to a five-game slide. The Terriers fell to eventual champion Northeastern, 2-1, in overtime during the opening round of the Beanpot Tournament before going on to drop a 5-2 decision in the third place game against Harvard. In their only Hockey East game of the weekend, they fell to UMass, 4-2, to close out their regular season series, finishing with a record of 0-2-0 against the Minutemen this season.


Merrimack vs. Maine

- Merrimack plays host to Maine for two games over the weekend in the two teams’ first meeting since last February. They Warriors and Black Bears split their series last season, 1-1-0, with each team posting an overtime victory.

- The Warriors will look to put a stop to a five-game skid after being shutout, 5-0, in their only game of the weekend on the road at UConn.

- Maine is back on the road after playing host to Providence for two games. They were shut out by the Friars, 1-0, on Friday night, but came back to skate to a 3-1 victory on Saturday, finishing their regular season series tied at 1-1-0.

- Senior Brendan Robbins (Nashua, N.H.) scored his first game-winning tally of the season in Saturday night’s win.
