BOSTON - Aerin Frankel tied the all-time school record with her 20th career shutout, making 16 saves, while Skylar Fontaine, Brooke Hobson and Ani FitzGerald all scored goals to lead No. 3 Northeastern (2-1-0, 2-1-0 HEA) to a 3-0 win over Maine (4-3-0, 4-3-0 HEA) on Sunday inside Matthews Arena. The Huskies outshot the Black Bears 47-16 in the game.
After a scoreless first period, Fontaine broke the tie with a give-and-go with Alina Mueller and found the back of the net to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead. The third-ranked Huskies continued to pressure Maine, outshooting the Black Bears 20-5 in the second period, but Maine's goaltender Loryn Porter came up big for the Black Bears to keep it a one-goal deficit.
Hobson then gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead with a wrist shot that found the top of the net on a nice play from Katy Knoll and Andrea Renner. Just two minutes later, FitzGerald netted her first collegiate goal on a nice take away at center ice and skated into the zone before she zipped a snap shot over the goaltender's right shoulder.
Frankel ties the career record of Erika Silva (1997-2001, 98 games played) with 20 shutouts. A native of Briarcliffe Manor, N.Y., Frankel reached the milestone in just 87 games for the Huskies.
Northeastern will take on Maine again tomorrow inside Matthews Arena at 4 p.m. The game will be televised on NESN.
