UConn Upends Maine, 5-2, To Sweep Weekend Series
Senior forward Catherine Crawley scored two goals for the Huskies

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's hockey team (14-11-1, 11-7-1 HE) used an explosive three-goal first period to propel themselves to a 5-2 victory over the Maine Black Bears Saturday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum. The Huskies sweep the weekend and take the season series against Maine 3-0.

The game got off to a fast start as both teams put one on the board within the first two and a half minutes. UConn struck for the game's first goal at 2:01 off a redirect from Viki Harkness. Emily Reid threw a shot on goal, and Harkness was able to get her stick on the puck and tip it into the cage to give UConn a 1-0 lead. Maine responded with a goal just 18 seconds later, as Celine Tedenby crashed the boards and stuck home the rebound to level the score.

Taylor Wabick put the Huskies back in front after notching her fourth goal of the year at the 7:20 mark. The junior rifled a shot from the point that deflected off a Maine skater and into the net to give UConn a 2-1 advantage. Crawley doubled the lead at 15:05 as she was able to slip one past the Black Bear goalie and into the back post.

UConn pushed its lead to three on Crawley's second of the night. After Briana Colangelo won the faceoff, Tristyn Svetek sent a pass ahead to Crawley in transition and the senior went top shelf to give the Huskies a 4-1 lead.

Maine sliced the lead to two on Ida Kuoppala's power play goal at 8:59.

The Huskies kept Maine out of the net with stellar defense in the third period. UConn held the Black bears to just three shots in the frame and registered a penalty kill on a Maine power play.

Natalie Snodgrass added the finishing touches to the win with an empty netter at 19:42.
