BOSTON UNIVERSITY EARNS 6-1 EXHIBITION WIN OVER TEAM RUSSIA

Freshman forward Jordan Juron had a goal and an assist for the Terriers

BOSTON - Six Terriers had multi-point efforts as the No. 7/5 Boston University women's ice hockey team defeated Team Russia, 6-1, in an exhibition contest on Monday night at Walter Brown Arena.

BU (9-3-1, 4-2-1 WHEA) scored the final six goals of the game to secure the victory. The Terriers went 2-0-1 in their three exhibition tilts this season and scored at least four goals in each game.

Six different skaters scored for BU, with four of them (Jordan Juron, Jenelle Kohanchuk, Kathryn Miller and Rebecca Russo) also adding an assist. Junior Kaleigh Fratkin and sophomore Kayla Tutino each lit the lamp, while juniors Meghan Riggs and Shannon Doyle each had two helpers. Senior goaltender Alissa Fromkin turned aside 15 shots to earn the win.

Russia opened the scoring at the 6:50 mark of the first period when Ira Gavrilova combined with Ekaterina Pashkevich to beat Fromkin.

Tutino responded less than three minutes later when she tied the game, 1-1. Doyle began the play when she fed the puck to senior Isabel Menard in the neutral zone. Senior Isabel Menard carried the puck into the offensive end and saucered a short pass to Tutino, who beat goaltender Anna Vinogradova (9 saves) near the left post.

It took just 1:59 for the Terriers to take the lead when Fratkin fired a shot from the left point that got past Vinogradova. Miller and Kohanchuk each earned an assist on the goal. Juron then made it a 3-1 game when she won a battle along the half-wall and eventually drove to the net to score from close range. Russo and Riggs had the helpers on Juron's goal.

Kohanchuk scored a shorthanded goal at 13:24 of the second period after a nice effort to keep a play alive. Junior co-captain Marie-Philip Poulin carried the puck into the offensive zone and unsuccessfully tried to beat a defender. The puck bounced towards goaltender Anna Prugova (18 saves) and appeared as if it was covered, but Kohanchuk kept with it and knocked it home to make it a 4-1 game. Doyle was also credited with an assist as she started the play in the BU zone.

Miller's goal came at the 4:41 mark of the final frame. Senior Taylor Holze won an offensive-zone draw to Miller at the left point, who then dumped it below the net. Riggs won a battle below the goal line to get the puck back to Miller at the point, who sent a shot past Prugova.

Russo's impressive hand-eye coordination led to the final BU goal. Juron won the puck along the right half-wall in the Russia zone, but was left without a shooting lane. She sent the puck towards Russo who was charging to the net. The freshman forward batted the puck out of mid-air and into the back of the net.

The Terriers will resume conference play this weekend with a home-and-home series against Providence. BU will make its lone trip of the season to Providence on Friday night (7 p.m.) before the teams conclude the weekend with a Saturday matinee at Walter Brown Arena (3 p.m.).
