UMass Lowell Notches 3-1 Win At Vermont
Sophomores Zach Kaiser, Jordan Schulting and Matt Brown each scored a goal for the River Hawks

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Scoring in each of the three periods, the UMass Lowell hockey team (6-8-0) defeated Vermont (1-8-2), 3-1, in the first game of a weekend series on Friday.

"We're proud of the effort," said Head Coach Norm Bazin. "I thought we had a sustained effort for most of the game and our puck possession was good throughout. Overall, there's lots to be proud of and on a travel day, no less."

The River Hawks outshot the Catamounts, 33-11, on the night. UMass Lowell has not allowed fewer shots in a single game since holding Alabama-Huntsville to 10 on October 26, 2007.

Junior goalie Owen Savory (Cambridge, Ontario), who came just two minutes shy of the shutout, totaled 10 saves in his second win of the season. On the opposite end of the ice, Gabe Carriere registered 29 stops in the loss.

Six different River Hawks tallied one point in the contest, including sophomore Jordan Schulting (Penticton, B.C.), who scored his first collegiate goal.

UMass Lowell controlled the puck from the start and earned its first power play less than two minutes into the game, although Vermont was able to withstand three consecutive shots and kill it off.

The visitors jumped in front, 1-0, at 11:11 of the first period when junior Seth Barton (Kelowna, B.C.) dished a pass to classmate Zach Kaiser (Orangeville, Ontario), who headed straight for the net and fired glove-side.

The River Hawks then held UVM without a shot on goal for the first 14 minutes of the second, allowing the team to stretch its margin to 2-0, as Schulting capitalized on a power play opportunity.

Back on the ice and just two minutes into the third, sophomore Matt Brown (Wood Ridge, N.J.) forced a turnover and beat the Vermont goalie one-on-one to add an insurance goal. The 3-0 margin would stand for the majority of the period until the home team was able to get on the board in the final two minutes on a goal by Tristan Mullin.

The River Hawks and Catamounts will play once more at Gutterson Fieldhouse tomorrow, Saturday, February 27, at 7 p.m.
