NEW HAVEN, Conn. - University of Massachusetts hockey wrapped up its non-conference slate on Friday night, falling 5-3 to Yale at Ingalls Rink. The Minutemen erased an early 1-0 deficit and led 2-1 after one period of play, but the Bulldogs rallied for two goals apiece in the second and third periods. Following the loss, UMass is now 9-8-0, while Yale improves to 7-8-0 on the season.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring 3:57 into the first as Luke Stevens tipped an Anthony Walsh shot past Matt Murray. Ryan Hitchcock collected an assist, as well.

The Minutemen were quick to respond, though, netting the equalizer just 1:03 later. Sophomore Jack Suter redirected in Niko Hildenbrand's shot from the top of the left faceoff circle for his second of the season.

UMass then converted on its first power play opportunity of the night to go in front, 2-1. Freshman Oliver Chau wristed home a feed from junior Ivan Chukarov and freshman John Leonard for his team-leading eighth goal of the year.

Yale tied things up at 2-2 at the 6:53 mark of the second. JM Piotrowski sent a one-timer past Murray with Brett Jewell and Mitchell Smith picking up the assists.

The Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead late in the frame as Joe Snively and Tyler Welsh set up a slapper from the blueline by Adam Larkin at 17:14.

Snively put Yale in front by two, 4-2, 9:19 into the third period and later added an empty net goal that sealed the result at the 18:52 mark.

Freshman Jake Gaudet scored for a second-straight game, and closed the gap to 4-3 for UMass midway through the third. Chau collected an assist on the play for his fifth multi-point game of the season, while sophomore Jake McLaughlin picked up the secondary helper.

The Bulldogs out-shot the Minutemen, 38-25 in the contest and were 0-for-3 on the power play. UMass finished 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

Freshman Matt Murray had 33 saves in net for the Minutemen and Corbin Kaczperski turned aside 22 between the pipes for Yale.

UMass resumes Hockey East play tomorrow night, Jan. 6, when the squad heads to Lowell for a 7 p.m. matchup against the River Hawks.
