NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Tied at 2-2 in overtime, Penn State's Andrew Sturtz found the back of the net 1:20 into the extra period to give the Nittany Lions a 3-2 win over the Irish on Saturday evening at the Compton Family Ice Arena (3,518).

The loss was Notre Dame's first of the season at the Compton Family Ice Arena.

The #3/4 Irish (3-2-1) leveled the score on two occasions, but were unable to take the lead against Penn State (3-1-1).

Trailing 1-0 in the second period, Notre Dame's Joe Wegwerth scored his first goal of the season, defelcting a Jordan Gross shot from just in front of the goal crease to tie the score at 1-1 at 11:06 of the period.

After the Nittany Lions' Nate Sucese gave the visitors the lead early in the third period for the second time in the game (2-1, 3:09), the Irish again found a way to draw even. After earning a power play, Wegwerth scored his second goal of the night to knot the score up at 2-2 at 11:06.

Neither team was able to come up with game winner as the third period went on, forcing the game into overtime.

The Irish finished 2-for-6 on the power play, while Penn State was 0-for-5.

In net, Peyton Jones made 26 saves for the Nittany Lions, while Cal Petersen finished with 30 saves for Notre Dame.

COACH JACKSON'S THOUGHTS

On the end of the game...

"We shot ourselves in the foot at the end of the third period with the too many men on the ice penalty. Even though it wasn't a power play goal (in overtime) it was right after. We had a long change and the guys were tired after the end of the penalty kill, so it still was a direct result of the situation. I think we gave up three 2-on-1s in the third period and overtime and you just can't do that if you're going to be a great team."

On Penn State...

"(Penn State) is as hard working of a working team that there is in the country. They push the puck up the ice really and defend well. They have good sticks defensively and they don't give you much. You really have to work hard to create scoring chances in transition and you have to score on the power play. Tonight we did a good job on special teams but at 5-on-5 we broke down a few times."

On the first six games of the season ...

"We are to the point where we are starting some conference games so we have been rotating forwards and defensemen a little bit. We are trying to see which guys are going to give us the best opportunity to get started on Thursday night. I think the first six games have been a good test for some guys. We're starting to get a good feel for where some of the younger guys fit."

IRISH FIRST STAR

Joe Wegwerth turned in his first ever two-goal game for the Irish. Both tallies came from down low while on the power play.

NOTRE DAME SCORING

1-1 | Joe Wegwerth tied the game, 1-1, at 11:06 of the second period with a power-play goal when he deflected a Jordan Gross goal in front. Gros let a quick wrist shot fly from the high slot that glanced off Wegwerth's thigh and into the net. Andrew Oglevie earned the other assist on the play.

2-2 | Joe Wegwerth tied the game, 2-2, at 11:06 of the third period. With Notre Dame already on the power play, the Nittany Lions were faced with a delayed penalty call so Cal Petersen got to the bench for the extra attacker. Skating six-on-four, Andrew Oglevie whipped the puck down low. Jake Evans picked it up below the goal line and dropped it out front, where Wegwerth buried his first of the season.
