NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Anders Bjork tallied three points on one goal and two assists to lead the #11 Notre Dame hockey team to a 5-3 victory over Holy Cross on Friday in its opening round game of the Shillelagh Tournament at Compton Family Ice Arena (4,581).

Connor Hurley, Joe Wegwerth, Cam Morrison and Andrew Oglevie also added goals for the Irish (7-4-2, 3-2-1 HEA).

Hurley chipped in an assist to go along with his first-period goal, while Tory Dello finished with a pair of assists on the night against the Crusaders (5-4-2, 2-2-2 AHA).

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Irish got on the board early, as Hurley found the back of the net at 3:46 of the first period to give the Irish a 1-0 lead.

The Crusaders answered at 12:37, however, evening the score on Peter Crinella's first goal of the year. Then, Holy Cross snatched the lead with a quick goal in the second period, as T.J. Moore buried an unassisted shot at 1:27.

The Irish provided a response and then some with two goals later in the second period. The first came off the stick of Joe Wegwerth at the 13:16 mark, assisted by Jake Evans and Tory Dello.

Notre Dame then converted on the power play at 17:37, with Cam Morrison scoring off the deflection from a Jordan Gross shot. Bjork also assisted on the play.

Holy Cross pulled within a goal four seconds into a power play opportunity at 10:20 of the third. Danny Lopez's sixth goal of the season snapped a streak of 15 consecutive penalty kills for the the Irish dating back to a 0-0 tie at Northeastern on November 13.

Andrew Oglevie then slammed the door for the Irish with an empty-net goal with five seconds remaining, his sixth tally of the year.

Captain Cal Petersen stopped 17 of the 20 shots he faced on the night to earn the win, while Paul Berrafato registered 25 saves.

The Irish were 1-for-4 on the power play, while Holy Cross finished 1-for-2.

The win was Notre Dame's fifth consecutive victory over Holy Cross in seven series meetings, but first since the 2010 season. The Irish now own a 5-2-0 record over the Crusaders.

COACH JACKSON'S THOUGHTS

On regaining momentum after going down 2-1...
"We bent, but we didn't break and we waited until we had the opportunity to score. It was a fairly good response, but it probably should have happened a little bit sooner. (Holy Cross is) a good hockey team. They knocked off Providence College already this year; they've knocked off Union; they've been earmarking these big games. They played well against Boston College and gave them a lot of problems."

On Cam Morrison's net-front presence and the growth of the freshman class...
"I switched him off that line. Joe Wegwerth's been playing pretty well, too, as a big man for us and we need those big guys to be big and get to the net, especially on the power play. That's Cam's game. That's where he scores and that's where he has success, so it's really important for us. All of those freshmen, you hope that they grow. I thought that Andrew Peeke played really well, (too). You want those freshmen defensemen and freshmen players to continue to grow as the season progresses."

On the play of Anders Bjork...
"He was (the best player on the ice). Not just offensively, but he was finishing checks; he was back-checking hard. I was proud of him tonight. I'm trying to encourage him to be more than just a one-dimensional player and tonight he was. He did a good job on the penalty kill; he used his speed on defense as much as he did on offense. I just try to keep talking to him about doing that to get more offense and tonight he had some good offensive opportunities."

On the performance to open the weekend...
"It was better. The whole emphasis all week long was to try to build off what we did last Friday night and for the most part I thought we did. There were a few sags, a few moments. It's always challenging when you're playing someone you don't know, and they're a well-coached team. They're certainly a team that's going to eat some people this year. They've got enough depth up front and they do good things. They make it hard to play against."

On the importance of winning the Shillelagh Tournament for the first time since 2010...
"I reminded them before the game, this is like an NCAA regional. You're going to play two different teams on two different nights, so it's more about what you do than what they do. We try to prepare for the opponent and we will give them some specifics as far as what we have to watch for tomorrow, but we haven't had the best Friday nights this year at home and that was a good step for us. We just need to try to finish the job tomorrow."
