KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The No. 14/15 Notre Dame hockey team built a 3-0 lead over Western Michigan but the Broncos rallied on home ice to force a 3-3 overtime tie on Saturday night at the Lawson Ice Arena (3,342).
With the tie, Notre Dame moved to 10-4-7 on the season (6-1-2 HEA) and the Irish are unbeaten in the last eight games (5-0-3).
Dylan Malmquist found the back of the net for his eight goal of the season midway through the first period and then Anders Bjork scored his second of the weekend series midway through the second period. Jake Evans scored a power-play goal for the Irish at 5:12 of the third.
After Michael Rebry made it a 3-1 game just 16 seconds after the Evans goal, Sheldon Dries scored the game's final two goals, including an extra attacker tally at 19:38 of the third.
Cal Petersen finished with 36 saves for the Irish, including a game-saving stop on Dries on a two-on-one chance with time expiring in the overtime stanza.
In the Western Michigan net, Lukas Hafner made 27 stops for the Broncos.
On special teams, Notre Dame finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while Western Michigan was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
Just like Notre Dame's series at Denver, who is also a member of the NCHC, the Irish and Broncos also played an exhibition three-on-three overtime period consistent with NCHC overtime protocol on Saturday night.
Including a 2-0-1 record versus the Western Michigan, Notre Dame finished 2015-16 non-conference play with a 4-3-4 mark (2-0-4 against the NCHC).
The Irish return to Hockey East action next weekend by playing host to Merrimack College for a two-game series (Jan. 15-16) that will be broadcast live by the NBC Sports Network.
Goals
-- Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead at 9:34 of the first period on Dylan Malmquist's eighth goal of the season. Andrew Oglevie intercepted a Western Michigan clearing attempt and got the puck to Malmquist, who beat Hafner high for his fourth point of the weekend series (2-2-4).
-- The Irish took a 2-0 lead at 8:35 of the second period when Anders Bjork took a pass from Bobby Nardella in the neutral zone, broke into the offensive zone and blew by the Western Michigan defense before cutting in front and sliding the puck through Hafner's legs for his seventh goal of the season. Jordan Gross also earned an assist on the play.
-- Notre Dame took a 3-0 lead at 5:12 of the third on a Jake Evans power-play goal. After a long spell of possession in the offensive zone, Sam Herr took a Bobby Nardella pass and snapped off a wrist shot in front. Hafner fought it off, but Evans was there to slot in the rebound for his third goal of the season, which was his second power-play tally of the year.
-- Just 16 seconds later, Western Michigan got on the board when Michael Rebry was able to get a quick wrist shot past Petersen from the slot, with Taylor Fleming and Frederik Tiffels earning the assists.
-- Sheldon Dries made it a 3-2 game when he deflected a Colt Conrad shot in front at 12:01 of the third.
-- Western tied it up on an extra attacker goal by Dries at 19:38 of the third. After the Irish defense blocked a shot in front of Petersen, Dries was able to slot the rebound in for his second goal of the game.

-- Notre Dame moved its unbeaten streak to eight games (5-0-3), its longest unbeated streak since going 7-0-1 from Feb. 2 - March 14, 2014.
-- Notre Dame scored first for the 17th time this season (out of 21 games) and is now 10-2-5 when doing so.
-- With a goal last night and an assist tonight, Andrew Oglevie established his first career point streak.
-- Cal Petersen made his 21st-consecutive start in the Irish goal to open the 2015-16 season and his 34th in a row dating back to last season.
-- Anders Bjork has a six-game point streak (4-3-7). Bjork's goal on Saturday night was his seventh of the season, tying his goal total from his freshman season when he scored seven goals in 41 games.
-- Bobby Nardella has assists in the last three Notre Dame games, matching his career-long point streak.
