OWELL, Mass. -- Senior goaltender Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.) amassed 28 saves to lead the No. 5 ranked UMass Lowell Hockey team to a 2-1 victory against Maine in Hockey East play on Friday night at the Tsongas Center in front of 6,572 fans.

The River Hawks improve to 7-1-2 overall (3-0-2 HEA) with the victory, while Maine falls to 0-7-3 and 0-3-0 in Hockey East contests.

The teams skated to a scoreless 50 minutes before senior defenseman Michael Kapla (Eau Claire, Wis.) notched his second goal of the season at 9:35 in the third period on a wrist shot from the top of the slot to get the River Hawks on the scoreboard first.

UMass Lowell sophomore forward C.J. Smith (Des Moines, Iowa) added an empty-net goal for his third of the year with 1:01 left in the game. Maine followed that up with an extra attacker power play tally by Will Merchant for his fourth of the season with just 30 seconds remaining. Smith finished the night with a game-high five shots on goal.

Boyle, who registered his seventh victory of the season, stopped 10 shots in the second period and seven in the third frame, while Maine's Rob McGovern finished with 26 saves in the losing effort.

In the faceoff circle, Joe Gambardella (Staten Island, N.Y.) won 19 of 27 faceoffs (70%), while Maine's Steven Swavely won 17 of 23 (74%).

UMass Lowell returns to action on Sunday, November 15th at Maine. Game time from Alfond Arena in Orono is 5 p.m. The game will be televised live by American Sports Network and will be aired regionally on New England Sports Network (NESN).
